Deion Sanders interviews Cam Newton (airing soon)

He either doesn't say what he means or he really is just cocky.

Im starting to believe its the first. He tries to be a well spoken and straight forward individual, but his statements sometimes are really off putting.

Carrying his father's lifestyle once he's drafted? That makes his dad sound like a money hungry bastard, which doesn't help the pay for play allegations.

The god given talent stuff does come off as he doesn't have to compensate for talent by studying or putting in extra work.

Saying that the first thing he wants to do is go on vacation with his mom? I get it, but really? That makes it sound like "Whew! I am the number one pick and ive got 50 million in the bank so I can relax now". Not exactly what you want to hear, even if it's not what he meant.

I hope he is just misspoken, and not this naive, cocky and immature.

Here's the video. Of note is part of the exchange that starts around 2:14

"Two people that always talk about as far as preparing for each game is Tom Brady and Peyton Manning. You have to respect that. But one thing that I also look at is, no offense to these guys or those guys, but that's not God given. Preparation is not God given."

What this says to me is that he expects to win on talent alone. It could be a long year.

not at all, what he was saying is that because preperation is NOT God given, you have to work at it and put in the extra time and effort, and thats what makes guys like manning and brady great.

He gives a good interview.

Sometimes I think he needs to pause and think about what he says is going to sound like though. I get what he meant about Manning and Brady but those are some heavy names to be throwing around when you're talking about yourself.

talent is God given...what you do with it isn't. that was what he was saying and it was pretty obvious to me, but then i'm not looking for ammo in my hater gun.

i really liked his comments about being a leader, though. really well said (for him anyway lol). thought came across clearly anyway. expects to be a leader, but it won't happen when he walks in that door. no sense of entitlement. he knows it's something he's going to have to earn. imo, with that attitude it won't take long.

one thing that i will say is that being a leader doesn't mean being a teacher or being better or having more to offer than the other guys around you. it's all about getting the people you work with to get singularly focused on a goal and getting them to give it everything they've got, but you have to get people drawn to you or able to listen to you to pull that off. his charisma and humility (and yes, i mean humility as a teammate) will help make that happen quickly.

gotta set that bar high. thats who he grew up watching and they are the prime examples of excellence. i want him to have his eyes set on being that great and realizing the work that it takes to get there. i want him to believe he can achieve it...if he works hard enough. he's got the natural talent to be one of the greats and maybe even to revolutionize the way the position is played...but that won't happen unless he stays focused on the work it takes. from what i have seen and heard from those that have actually worked with him, he has that work ethic and drive that is needed to make it happen.
