Panthers didn't draft newton to sit

Carolina came out and said that they just weren't going to sit him to sit him...he'll get a chance to start this season for sure.

Rivera stressed Newton isn't designed to be a "franchise savior," but said he'll get a shot to play as a rookie. Rivera acknowledged they may have to scale down the playbook so as not to overwhelm him, but they'll also add elements to take advantage of his skills.

Shot, chance...all possibles. It seems they have changed from the definately sit position. That may just be a PR ploy not to piss off the pro-Newton crowd. It will look better to say he got a shot to compete and isn't ready yet, thus sideline education.

Start him when he is deemed ready. Not a day sooner. If that is day 1, great; if it is 2012 so be it.

Sounds like our staff has a lot of confidence in this kid. That is encouraging.

very true, but the one thing I will say is there is 0 chance they'd come on TV and say "Cam Newton can't do anything for us in year one, we're gonna sit him until 2012 at earliest when he might know how to play by then."

I do think they have confidence in him, but I think it's confidence for what he will do in the future.

I could see him in situational things. Goal to go situations to run bootlegs, fake sneaks (ala The Golden Calf of Bristol), etc. Other than that, i don't see much from him first year and for good reason. Let him study and get his knowledge of the game on par with his physical attributes.

Cam needs to start game 1...even if he is just handing the ball off. He needs to be slowly given more and more plays like the Jets did with Sanchez his rookie year. Were not going to win the superbowl next year anyhow.

...then they need to teach him to slide and run out of bounds. If he gets hurt we will be back to Clausen for the rest of the year. He can't run past NFL talent like he did in college.

Rivera said he'd start whenever he's ready. It doesn't get much plainer than that. So if he's ready by week 1 he'll start.

here's the thing.. there is a big difference between what you all think is "ready by week 1" and the coaching staff..

I agree, he should start when he's ready. I highly doubt that will be in the first half of the season.

    • Jake in his prime was a gutsy QB. But just like with even someone like Cam. Father time is undefeated. It's very unfortunate we have a guy who is only 24 years old that has an equivalent arm to that. Absolutely blows my mind that our brain trust lacked the basic common sense to value arm talent when making a massive trade with ramifications for years to come. Unforgivable incompetence.
    • Jake, to me, will always hold a special place in my heart.  I really feel like for his era, he deserved way more love than he got, and should’ve had more than his one Pro Bowl.  He was a gamer with an underrated rocket arm. but let me tell you, after his Tommy John surgery, when he came back, I can’t remember who it was against, but it think it was a division game, he threw a ball that was supposed to be a throw away, as I think he was under pressure, and that poo floated forever and died right at the boundary where a defender ran over and picked it off.  One of the worst throws I ever saw.  His arm just wasn’t the same after the injury and surgery.  All that to say, that’s what almost every Bryce throw to the sidelines looks like to me.
    • And again, when watching him in college he had one distinct trait that I feel makes a franchise QB - on those plays when everything breaks down around him, he creates one on his own.  He doesn’t rely on or need everyone else.  That play last night on the final drive where he was getting sacked and threw it to Diggs before his knee hit the ground?  He does similar things all the time.  Mahomes, Allen, Lamar, etc., they all do it.  It’s what made Cam so special. but we picked a guy that’s the opposite of that.  He desperately needs someone else to make a play for him because he can’t.  Even that play yesterday on 4th down to Horn.  That wasn’t a great pass.  The defender was late and came down to make a play in the ball and Bryce threw it high and outside where Horn had to leave his feet and really use strong hands to catch it.  We relied on a 5’9” rookie playing in his first pro game to make THAT catch at THAT time bc of the early turnovers and a not great throw.  Crazy.
