Why this draft was a success

We will actually have all our draft picks next year. It was really hard seeing New England take our second round draft pick at the very top of the round.

I really don't know anything about our draft picks outside of Cam Newton and while I'm not sure about Newtons accuracy or his game knowledge/intelligence I will say it appears he has a good mindset and attitude which is the most important step to becoming the leader of this football team.

I got us coming in last in the South again with a 7-9, 8-8 record if we are lucky so I'm glad we will have all our draft picks next year since they all should be very valuable.

I could see that happening too, Swordcat. Despite their record (which I've said numerous times was inflated by feasting on a cupcake schedule, same thing as TB) they weren't dominant or anything last year. The Steelers beat them without their supposedly "elite" QB.

I'm not a guy who really knows a lot about college football, so I can't really speak to the potential of the guys we picked up in later rounds, but...

But I get the impression we had a game plan and we've stuck to it based on the things Rivera has said to the press.

And that leads me to believe that either:

A) Hurney, Rivera, (and Richardson?) are on the same wavelength for now, making running the franchise a smoother process

or

B) It's part of Rivera's (perhaps unpublicized) agreement with the franchise to get what he needs to run this team without TOO much interference.

...or both.

In any event, I'm encouraged about the future. It seems like there's a plan and some order to things. I don't know if I ever really got that impression during Fox's tenure.

As for a random note, its going to be really interesting to see if Armanti Edwards does well as a receiver next year. I read in another thread that someone said he was putting on some muscle, so that's good...I have no earthly clue how good he is catching and running the football, but I guess we'll see this coming season! If he turns out to be good, everyone can finally stop bitching about that second rounder lol.

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
