Rumor is we had offer of a 3/4th this year and a conditional pick in 2012 on the table.

Not a bad deal.

Rumor also is 5+ teams want him so a bidding war is possible.

this wouldn't surprise me at all. Smith could be a nightmare if he was added to the Ravens, Pats, or Chargers

I really thought he would trade pick 98 (1st pick on 3rd day) to move up a 5-10 spots up from 65 into the late 2nd. I'm glad he didn't. If your paradigm is build on youth, you've got to, you know, have some.

I don't care about Belichek or Brady, other than intermittently watching them get to old to cut the mustard and letting slip the occasional maniacal hysterical giggle.

Speaking of Belicheck, they haven't won a playoff game since 2007. The Patriots have the best quarterback, the supposed best coach and after the regular season success they have struggled the past few years winning a playoff game.

Honestly I think they have struggled to fix the defense especially getting pressure on the quarterback. For all their greatness, they have been outdone by the Jets recently.

and they walked out of this years draft ignoring that again..

yep, and he still didnt bring in any help to get after the QB which i thought was a bigger need than anything. i believe he drafted 1 OLB so there draft was not all that good because they didnt address all their needs.

That's it really. All those great draft picks for the past several years and they have done little outside of the regular season. In August Brady will be 34 which for many QBs spells diminished returns as injuries start to get the best of them and the window is beginningto close. All those great picks don't mean squat if you squander them.

did Bellichick leave with more draft picks this year? I didn't follow them and haven't heard..

Extra first next year.

After they trade up for Andrew luck I'll stop watching football.

I'd be ecstatic with a third or higher.

Brady got hurt in 2008. Pioli and McDaniels both bolted in 2009.

it really is luck that the panthers left the draft with all future picks intact. as hurney says, they're allllways open for business, and listening to him talk (not an ironclad paragon of candor, i know), it wasn't for a lack of trying that they made no deals on draft day. he's like a kid on halloween night with his draft picks. can't wait to move 'em around and gobble them up.

It's because the Patriots, as I've said all along, DON'T ACTUALLY DRAFT WELL. There's a popular myth that the Patriots are good because they draft well and it's simply not true. They make a lot of trades for future picks, usually good trades, but the picks they use more often than not are not good players. Going back to '05, the only good players they've drafted: Mayo, Mankins, probably Gronkowski (only 1 year to judge so far), probably McCourty (only 1 year to judge so far), and an argument can be made for Merriweather, but I wouldn't go that far yet. Look at Moroney, 1st round pick they traded away 4 years later for less than a 4th round pick (they had to give their 6th with Moroney for Denver's 4th). That's not a good track record. Expand your mind people, don't just repeat myths that the media promulgates because you don't know any better. Do your research before regurgitating such rubbish! The Patriots are easily in the bottom portion of the league in drafting, in my opinion. I bet that "% of players still on the team and starting" stat would back that up if I cared enough to look it up. A lot of their players are either old or traded for or FA signings.

And yes, they got the steal of the decade in Brady, but that was dumb luck..not "drafting genius". Belichick didn't wait until the sixth round going "mwuhahahaha none of these fools know how great Brady will be...I'm just going to pass on him 5 or so times because I know no one else will draft him! <insert more evil laughter>"

Nothing since they got caught cheating. Makes you wonder how badly they cheated on us in 2004 SB.

    • Same. I would prefer a MNF game earlier in the season. As if more likely has some significance in case things go south this season. If we perform well enough we could even get another game forced to a Sunday night spot later in the season.
    • Wanted to jump into this thread. Although I do not post anymore I do look in as there are a few old friends around. Loved hearing some of the names you mentioned.  Another  oldie is NanceUSMC.  He is the one who got me here from the old Observer forum.  Good guy and smart football guy. I have learned a lot from a lot of good Huddlers over the years, Over time. we have sadly lost a few who left this earth too soon.  Anyone who know of someone, it would be nice to try to make a list.  One of the more recent, CosmoGirl,  was someone that kind of hit hard.  Life sucks sometimes. Some of the best times were when we had our own tailgate and could meet up in person.  I think it made us better. Several dedicated volunteers, lead by LiverMush, started setting things up in the wee hours of each gameday morning.  Don't know all those regulars but I remember JakeFlake was one.  For you newbies...each game,  a Huddler (or a group) sponsored the food for each tailgate.  Eating was free but a donation was asked for.  At the end of the year those donations were used to buy bicycles for Toys for Tots.  Over the years Huddlers bought a lot of new bikes for kids for Christmas.  (I am guessing a couple of hundred each year.)  We had a good time getting together, got to make friends in person, and then got to feel like you were doing something good. It was truly a community. I got to meet Dan Morgan at one of our tailgates...he brought pizza from his restaurant.  How many of you remember that?  Glad the restaurant did not make it....lol. Not only have people changed, and come and gone.....but the entire nature and purpose has changed. Nothing lasts forever and we move on but we still like to think about good times. Same reason we take pictures. Want to ask a question I have not seen anyone else mention......who remembers    "The Couch" ?  We have argued, laughed, lived the ups and downs of football and dealt with a little real life along the way.  A thanks to  the Mods who keep this going.  I am sure they sacrifice a lot of their time out of love for the forum and the Panthers. Take care my friends and be well.  I will close with my new favorite quote which I think is greatly needed in these difficult times.
    • My top-5 JAGS: 1. Tommy Tremble: May not ever be top-tier, but has been solid and you never doubt the effort. 2. Cade Mays: Not bad for a 6th rounder. Hated to see him go. 3. Brady Christensen: One of the most versatile backup OLs in the NFL. Hopefully we re-sign him. 4. Trevis Gipson: Quietly was really solid depth last season. Glad we brought him back. 5. Brycen Tremayne: Has been solid depth at WR, flashing at times last year.
