Will Cam be coddled?

Recommended Posts

Wouldn't bet anything, but I don't think he plays much this season.

I don't know. Maybe you are right (and I tend to agree with you) but Rivera sounds like he is itching to get this guy in the game.

And he will play this year. It might only be in 3rd and short situations or inside the 5 yard line but you can bet he is likely to see the field.

I'm conservative natured, I'd rather give him time to sit, learn and adjust rather than getting thrown to the wolves and hoping it doesn't have any longer term effects.

Off the subject, but I just got back to Charlotte from visiting my family...and right before Belmont Abbey on I-85 I saw a 'Welcome to Charlotte, Cam Newton' electronic billboard. I thought it was pretty cool.

This is what Hurney said on the matter

"The best way Cam can learn is to be out on the field and see things and experience those things, so you want to get him as many reps as possible. I think what it'll come down to is just a feeling about it when you get there after having seen him on the practice field for however long we will see him and see how he does in competitive situations and see how comfortable he is with things."

Doesn't mean he will definitely play but they also don't seem to want to sit him all season.

i actually think, after watching some of Newton's progress over his season at Auburn, that he will absolutely start before the bye in week 9. he clearly takes instruction and runs the offense as dictated. unless he gets a fluke injury or something he's going to show progress and pressure the coaching staff to get him in the game. he might even start week one. all the quarterbacks are going to be starting from scratch, more or less, in chudzinski's system. i would be very surprised if newton doesn't start in his first season. honestly, the only scenario i can see where that happens is that clausen gets off to a great start in the preseason and leads the team to the playoffs.

He can't be rushed. At the same time, he can't be buried at number 3 on the depth chart if they want to develop him quickly.

3rd string QB's don't get enough quality work in practice to allow them to be ready to play. Nor do they get enough time with their position coaches to learn defenses, etc.

I expect him to be no lower than 2 on the depth chart, and he will be coddled to the extent that the staff will spend a lot more than the normal amount of time developing him. He is, after all, the number 1 pick and the face of the franchise for the foreseeable future.

There are two foods of thought.

One, he sits and observes Clausen or whoever runs the team. Obviously, he has the opportunity to watch and learn. This was my initial thought on what we would do with him.

OR

Two, we put him in the game and rely mostly on our running game while feeding him bits and pieces of our offense each week.

Option One is the most conservative approach but doesn't give him the experience he is going to need.

Option Two puts him on the field and gives him the experience he will need.

I think If we put him on the field and expect him to carry the team then we are making a mistake. If we put him on the field and let him manage the game while he learns. We could succeed in developing him while he gets a better grasp of our offense. AKA J. Freeman.

    • Bryce also has a degree in psychology. He has an uncanny ability to compartmentalize things in a way that allows him to enter his second NFL season with optimism that he can still be the player who was worthy of being the No. 1 pick of the 2023 draft despite the kind of rookie year that has destroyed others in his position. Young credits that in part to his past. He graduated from the University of Alabama in three years with a degree in psychology. His father was a therapist in the mental health field for 20 years. His mother was a special education teacher, and his grandfather was a psychologist. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/40334565/bryce-young-developing-leader-panthers-year-2
    • This is just stupid. If Tepper owned the team and they were in your backyard it wouldn’t be any different after 6 losing seasons. People would be pissed and it just wouldn’t be any different.  This malaise is Tepper generated.
