I looked for this, cannot believe it has not been made into a thread. So I will throw it out there. If it has been discussed, Please forgive me. I have not been visiting much lately.

Basically, this is in reference to the right of refusal clause that is on the table for this year only. Each team will (of course, nothing has been approved) have the right to match offers for 3-4 players (TBD).

Personally, I think this is huge for the Panthers. It means that the only way we lose Charles Johnson is if someone pays so much, they win a bidding war. Since we have tons of cash and a huge need, I do not see teams trying to do that.

It also means we should have the option to keep Deangelo Williams. I imagine the third player we would protect is Thomas Davis, but I don't see a huge bidding war for his services.

The third player could be James Anderson, and it will be unless someone offers a ton for him. I do not see that happening, even though he will get paid. It depends on what Rivera wants to do with Connor, but I think Anderson gets protected.

If there is a fourth player, do not laugh, it could be J. Jansen--yes, the long snapper. He was solid last season, and needs to be re-signed because we have no one to take his place. I considered Matt Moore, Derek Landri, Dante Rosario, and even Nick Hayden, but Jansen would be the hardest to replace.

I think for CJ we probably get in a bidding war most likely.

I know Denver has said they have interest in D-will and Dolphins.

I hadn't heard any buyers for Davis or Anderson.

I've heard that the saints and falcons night be in the olb department with both teams interested in Anderson and the falcons with Davis but this is just fan speculation too so it probably not solid info.

I almost forgot I've seen on an espn insider that the Rams might be interested in Anderson as well

Teams that might pursue Charles Johnson:

Atlanta--They drafted Gamecock Cliff Matthews in the seventh, but I think they want a stud now. Matthews might not make the roster. Good news? CB is possibly a bigger need.

Denver--converting to a 4-3, they have many needs. DL is a huge need.

NY Giants--could lose 2 DEs before camp.

Minnesota--aging front 4, losing a DE-possibly.

New Orleans--Sure they drafted Cameron Jordan, but to take a conference rival's stud pass rusher could save Brees some lumps. The need a replacement for Alex Brown.

Philadelphia--Brandon Graham tore his ACL at the end of the season and they really didn't address it.

Tennessee--do not know why, maybe Babin, but they seem to be in the hunt.

IMHO I think they will refuse to get into a bidding war, sadly, someone will pay out the ass for him.

We have a ton of cash that we HAVE to spend. I see us keeping CJ unless the bidding is crazy. I think the teams in our division are our biggest threat because not only do they upgrade a position, they downgrade one for us. If we can take the pass rushing threats away from our nearest competitors, our QBs last longer. We will not let him go.

I agree. JR has, and will spend the money. He will regain the ebb of his fan base by "splashing" into FA (when it happens) by retaining our core. Its been our philosophy and in keeping Hurney it will remain our philosophy.

uhh, JR isnt gonna spend the money to keep certain players if there are better players available. He will pay what they are worth and thats it. lol you really think he sacrificed last season to stockpile money just to throw it away?

Uh, I don't recall anyone saying we would throw crazy money at our players if better players are available. Charles Johnson is 25, had about 12 sacks with no DTs and not much help from the other side. I realize that it was only 1 year, but still, 4-3 DEs are at a premium in this league and our coach knows that better than anyone. Who in free agency is better than CJ? It is debatable. We are not letting him go. To us, since we have 3 pretty good RBs in the stable, I think spending big on a 28-year old RB is not smart when you need top DT and CB help.

I did say that we would retain CJ unless the money gets stupid. JR paid Peppers more than he was worth to keep him here. He paid Jake more than he was worth. I think there are times when you have no choice. CJ is in the captain's seat, and he will be a Panther next season.

This is a key issue for us. I understand that in addition to expected resistance from the players, there is some resistance from some owners who plan to be very aggressive in free agency and are wanting to sign other team's players away from them. If we were able to protect 3 players you know Johnson would be one of them and we would pay what we needed to match any offers. He is a very important piece to our puzzle on defense and no matter what we pay, in 3 or 4 years if he continues to develop, he will be worth it.

As for who else we would protect, that is hard to say. Anderson and Williams would both be in the mix.

I will be very very surprised if Anderson, Williams, and CJ are not back. I can't imagine teams getting in a bidding war for Anderson, so that one will be pretty easy to resign. Williams has not shown that he has any interest to leave and we will pay him and he deserves it. We might have to overpay for CJ a little bit, because I think there will be a bidding war for him. Part due to the fact that there will not be many DE studs out there and there are a lot of teams that need to address that position. It will be a roll of the dice with CJ because he has only had one year with pro bowl numbers. I think he is worth it based on potential and his age, but it is going to be a bit of a gamble. I think we are going to have to pay him BIG money to stay. I would imagine $10 million a year to keep him.

Except for last year, JR has never let a player leave because of money.

davis also went to UG, so of course the faclowns fans want him

      Yeah, I could jump right into the unbelievable Bryce debate now that some people are trying to flip the script because Bryce Young has, at most, a handful of decent games as a pro, but that's going to work itself out. Suffice it to say that I've seen better QBs (with an s) in a Panthers uniform, and I've certainly seen better QBs be drafted while we're playing around with Bryce, one of them who beat the crap out of us already this season... Let's forget about Bryce (and his markedly underwhelming play since he's been here); I think that most sane fans will agree that drafting him was an error, but it happens. Sure, it doesn't happen to the tune of King's ransom---including your main receiver---but it happens. You bet, you lose. Speaking of receivers...and betting and losing... Oh, man, we drafted Xavier Legette. Yes, just like with Bryce, I've entered "the dark side." Some Huddlers were telling us from the beginning, and they were right. But, I'm not apologizing for waiting to see what a guy's got before making my decision on him. X was a one-year wonder at South Carolina who parlayed some really nice production that season, a great personality and thick country accent, into becoming a first round pick (but only in Carolina). For Dan Morgan and company, He was a big swing that has turned into a big whiff (and I can still feel the ill breeze from that one). Sh¡t happens, right? Well, not so fast. Ladd McConkey was the decidedly more polished receiver who was literally ready to hit the ground running as soon as stepping onto the field as a pro. Ladd was never the biggest guy (though not the smallest), but he was the guy that could run routes, always seemed to get open---no question---and had the same speed as X, but with legit quickness and nuanced shake and bake. But Dan chose the project. He chose the guy where the game speed looks more like a tractor trailer than a 5.0 mustang. Look, I've supported X (just like Bryce) many many a day, but no more. Now I'm not saying that I won't root for the guy. Just like with Bryce, he seems like a great kid. But as far as giving excuses for the kid, and, perhaps more importantly, waiting for some miraculous breakout, I'm done with that. I've seen enough. You don't draft a project for a project. And yes, Bryce had proven to be a project after his first season. In my mind, drafting a supposedly number one receiver that needs lots of development for a starting quarterback that needs immediate help to try and further his development is not going to lead to good things. Pick the surest guy. Or at least pick the one who appears to be the surest guy, because picking can be tricky... especially when you're too busy tricking yourself.

      That TD pass to Legette against Miami. Elite. The play where Bryce rolls right to buy time until Tet can reverse field.  Bryce pumps as multiple defenders close in.  He barely gets it away before he takes a big time hit.  Beautiful off platform throw and great catch by Tet.   The second TD to Tet against Dallas where Bryce dips and turns his shoulder in to evade the pass rusher.  Resets and finds Tet in the end zone. Dude embodies the Keep Pounding mantra.
