Edwards was a project pick when we took him so it's not entirely surprising that progression is being made in his case. Think about the fact that what he's doing is attempting to use his athleticism to convert to an entirely new position that he hadn't played before to my knowledge at any level consistently....ever.

I mean, small details that EVERY SINGLE OTHER player came into the combine and into their team camp with a certain set of skills inherent to the position. AE had none of that other than what he potentially heard from fellow WR prior to showing up. Hand position, route running, catching the ball properly, head fakes, body fakes, quick feet.... everything you look for in a WR was foreign to him at camp last year.

We can blame John Fox as much as we like, but Fox didn't create the problem nor did he create the expectations of AE with his draft position. That was Hurney that did that. He wasn't ready to see the field last year and pressure from upstairs probably made it happen. Fox probably resented that and thus the verbal backlash at him upon his exit.

Even in the best case comparisons like Ronald Curry and Antwaan Randal El you have guys that took a few years to develop. Curry caught 5 passes total his first two years in the league. Randal El was used primarily as a returner his first few years despite catching 80 passes total those two years. He only had 1 start to his credit those two years.

With these players, you just have to be patient and wait for the position to become natural to them. The pure athleticism will get them places if you give them time.

For those of you who will be at practice today...can somebody give an update on the RG position please? I know Schwartz has been starting there, but is anybody pushing him? What about Zeimba? Have they tried him inside yet? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

    • He makes a good point about Wallace.  In fairness to Wallace it is hard to play your position as freely as you need to when your defensive line is getting pushed around like ragdolls.  One of the greatest attributes a defensive line has is sucking up blocks, freeing up your linebackers.  Our defensive line couldn't suck up a lollipop more or less blocks.  I think Evans, Sanders and Tremble are going to be a really nice TE group.  I can see all three getting time on the field.  If Sanders can improve as a blocker teams won't be so inclined to believe it is a pass play whenever Sanders is on the field.  Ryan Fitzgerald, I think was an awesome pick-up. Hopefully he can fill our kicker void. Luke Kandra many turn out to be our next Norwell.  Everything I have heard about him says he's a beast.  He needs some refinement, but the good news is he's got Hunt and Lewis (arguably the best guard tandem in the league) to learn from.
    • Great teams build through the draft and have several young players that start that are on rookie contracts. It's important to hit on players in rounds 4 thru 7.  These should be future starters and solid depth.  When you hit on most of your picks you free up a lot of cap space for those one- or two-year players to fill spots you are thin at. No GM is going to perfect on all their picks.  You're going to whiff every once in a while.  That was Hurney problem.  He'd nail the first pick but after that it was reach after reach and we couldn't get any depth on this team. I'm excited about Morgan as our GM and hopefully he'll be around a long time.  It will be even better if Canales can continue to grow as a head coach, both in the development of young players and play calling. I remember last season after Young came back in the lineup and started to perform well.  We saw different plays I had only seen other teams use.   If Canales's play design and play calling continue to grow. Morgan and Canales will be linked together for a long time.  It would be nice to see a Coach and GM together for a decade or two. Go Panthers
