Clowney toying around on the bubble

David Clowney. Not the first name that comes to mind for the mainstream NFL observer.

Ask 10 people in a sports bar about the Panthers WR, and rest assured, 10 people will likely tell you they haven’t a clue. Clowney, a 5th round pick in 2007 by Green Bay, is a prime example of how one man’s misfortune than lead to another man’s gain.

He is amongst several receivers that have demonstrated consistency and playmaking ability in this very young NFL training camp season. Accompanying Clowney in that log-jam is Charly Martin, Wallace Wright and Kealoha Pilares.

Clowney is standing out amongst those on the bubble. A 50+ yard touchdown reception on a beautiful post-corner route from rookie QB Cam Newton led to the loudest roar from Saturday’s FanFest at Bank of America Stadium.

Clowney caught 10 passes for 102 yards in 2010.Carolina will likely keep 5 WR’s at the most. Sure bets include Steve Smith, Brandon LaFell and David Gettis. Newly acquired Legedu Naanee spent time with Rivera in San Diego, and impressed fans and coaches in his debut Saturday with his combination of size (6’2”, 220) and soft hands. Naanee is almost surely a lock, barring injury. Armanti Edwards has shown a higher degree of consistency in his second camp, and given the investment made to acquire him, it would be surprising to see him cut.

Yet again, Clowney finds himself the potential casualty of the dreaded “numbers game”. Given his performance on Saturday, and his consistency during the entire week in Spartanburg, Clowney will likely land work very soon with a team in need of a solid WR, if/when he is cut.

i wonder if there's a way to initially keep him and then trade him (or another of our promising WRs) to a team with depth at CB and desperate for a WR.

I'd like to see him with Bradford in WR hungry St Louis if not here.

Good guy, but unless we keep 6 WR's (possible) and he's good at ST it's hard to see him sticking here.

Not without the risk of cutting someone else you intended to keep.

Another good question is what happens to pilares if were only keeping five. Smith gettis, lafell,naanee, and maybe edwards. I can't see us cutting pilares and clowney but, wouldn't mind if that keeps a spot open for barney at TE. after seeing his huge catch and run at fan fest i think he has more to offer the team than has been shown under fox.

Pilares is practice squad eligible, though that comes with a risk.

Wow, that was a good read. It was a little all encompasing but still a good read. Honestly im not worried too much about wether Clowney stays or Martin is rotated to corner the most important peice that we have all discussed since last year is QB. I just dont see Clausen starting any further than the 2nd week of preseason maybe 3rd.

I think there is a higher probability that we keep 6 WR's than the article indicates. I assume we try to put Pilares on the practice squad? I hope nobody scoops him up.

Edwards will get a special teams spot vacated by kasay, not a wr spot. Smith, Lafell, Gettis, Naanee, and Pilares
