The Saltman and Boo go to Training Camp.

Well it was nice going to training camp yesterday and meeting up with boo. We started off the day by going to the beacon and ingesting a heart attack waiting to happen. Nonetheless it was pretty good and we went on to training camp before the players started coming out.

As you can see in this pic when we first arrived Danny Morrison was meeting and greeting with the fans. Boo just snuck up on him to take a pic, of what body part of his ? I don't know. But Boo was just looking so hot with her face painted so I knew if I didnt post the pic I would get a bunch of Pics or STFU.

Cute huh? well you didn't see it in the pic but boo had a cute panther tail on her ass too :ihih:

Anyways on to the observations.

I spent most of my team focused in on the Offense more then on the Defense so most of my observations are based on that.

Qbs: Jimmy was lighting it up last night. Pass after pass of rockets down the field with some errant passes mixed in. I don't know what changed in him but after fanfest looking at the tape must have lit a fire in his ass because he looked in command of the offense for once.

Cam was off the mark on most of his passes in 11 on 11 drills. Most of his completions were slants and a couple of post patterns but his out routes and corner routes were totally off the mark. Even Olsen couldn't make the grab in the corner of the endzone. He just had an off day just like everybody else. But what made me excited was seeing his energy and his determination in working on the mistakes he made and trying to improve himself. Its going to be fun to watch these 2 battle during the preseason.

Derek Anderson only had a couple of reps during the 11 on 11 drills and seemed a bit off but I guess it's to be expected? I just didn't see any thing to really write about pretty meh.

Rbs: These 4 backs on the roster are really fun to watch. Watching D-will squirt through the holes in the OL (yes TWSS) was nice to see. Jstew was looking like a monster yesterday popping a couple of Defensive players in the mouth. Sutton is just such an underrated player. The guy looks almost as shifty as D-will and has some real power to his his small frame. Goodson was having an off day to me. He was quick as his usual self on kickoff returns and ST but 11 on 11 he was getting stopped at the line time and time again. Was it the Dt's? Im not sure but he just couldn't get it going.

Wr: Naanee is a guy to watch. Errant pass after errant pass the guy was just clutch. Going after the ball and just taking it out of the air, was fun to see. Lafell looked pretty good, he caught every pass that hit his hands which is more then I can say for the last couple of practices of his. I didnt get to see Gettis much, I'm not sure if he got injured early or what but he wasn't on the field much. Edwards had a couple of good grabs but I didnt see much from him on 11 on 11 drills. One guy I did see a lot on the second teamers was Pilares.

Man is this guy quick. He looks like he has some real potential. How if he is the odd man out will we be able to stash him on the practice squad is beyond me.

TE: man what can I say. Olsen is huge!!! Him and both Shockey looked pretty good yesterday. Olsen just gets open and has some of the greatest hands I have ever seen. The guy is going to be a big time Goal Line threat. It's going to be really hard to stop these 2 Tight ends on game days. It's really nice to have some more weapons on this team besides Steve Smith and our Runningbacks.

OL: Man are we a little thin at this position with quality depth. I am really hoping they just gave Otah a day off for rest and he isnt injured again. But what I can say for his replacement, Lee Ziemba, is he is a freak. The guy is massive and made Everette Brown look like a peewee football player. It was ridiculous how he was man handling him and even Norwood sometimes. They guy is a steal. Besides him nobody else really stood out.

Random observations of the Defense:

I will say one thing about our linebackers, they are intense for every drill. Louder then anybody else on the team. It would have been nice to see Thomas Davis in pads but at least his injuries arent too bad. But this core is a solid group and is the strongest position on the Defense with the leadership and the talent to go a long with it.

Charles Johnson is a freak of nature. They guy didn't turn down his motor all practice. Even though he got paid a boatload him having a chip on his shoulder for the naysaysers is going to be good for us on D especially with no other proven pass rusher that I saw on the D-line.

I will say it was nice to see Chirs Gamble back in pads especially with Captain being out and the rest of the corners basically being 3rd stringers. Gamble seemed a bit off to me but I don't know. It's possible the coaching staff wanted him to take it easy.

But the secondary looks weak and thin and worries me a little. Watching Olsen wide open in the middle of the field to score a TD seemed like it was way too easy and it might be a big problem if we don't fix some of the mistakes.

All in all it was awesome to come to camp and sit there knowing we are going to have a football season this year with a new coaching staff and new players .

Speaking of coaching staff the drills and such seemed to me to be a lot more organized then last year when I went. It was almost like they were part of the military but I guess Rivera's influence shows in that. It was nice to see how about business the team is right now and I hope we can show something positive from that on gamedays.

Well that's it folks and I know it's not even close to as good as a tattoorhino observation thread but oh well.

Pics to come later in the evening.

That pic makes you look like two of the whitest people in existence, or the grayest in a quote box.

(Translation: not seeing it)

    • It all sounds great. The only unknowns are injuries and how they will need to be addressed. Horn has a history as does the newly added Jaelen Phillips and Cooker has yet to play an entire season as well. And then there are the Ikey's - totally unexpecteded injuries that put a major wrench in your plans. I do think its a great plan though.
    • If we pay Bryce like a franchise QB we're completely and utterly buttfuged.
    • In my view, the realistic expectation for this team to compete will start 2027.  At that time, I think we could be looking at the following (this is HIGHLY speculative):   QB:  You know, Bryce.  I am not a fan, but they don't ask me.  But there is reason for hope--and here it is.  Bryce will be entering his prime.  Since we are likely to pay him, there will be changes that I include throughout this exercise--I realistically speculate on what they are going to do with Bryce and then I realistically speculate on what means in terms of the cap and other positions. Bryce HAS IMPROVED.  The idea is that if you give him more weapons and protection, that will continue.  His career:   At this rate, if his growth continues, by 2027 we should expect nearly 30 TDs and about 12 Interceptions and a Rating of about 98.  His completion percentage should settle at 65-66% or so.  If that happens, you can win with it. The following stats demonstrate how the Panthers will be able to afford it (and re-sign Ickey) My guess is they will require about $60m per year. This is why rookies who can play are important.  It also helps us see the blueprint.  You may disagree, but this is the cruel realities of the salary cap. Robert Hunt:  Cut post June 1 and save $19m.  Who do you replace him with?  Ickey. Tershawn Wharton:  Cutting him saves nearly $15m.  We should all hope to see Aaron Hall (UDFA) make the roster and play well.  Regardless, this is a position we would likely have to address in the next draft. Trevin Moehrig:  Cutting Moehrig as the starting SS saves this team $16.5m.   Ransom will be on year 3 of a cheap rookie deal and should be more than ready to take the reins.  their styles are similar.  Furthermore, FS Wheatley (R, 4th round) will be starting. Taylor Moton:  So much depends on his knee, but I have an idea that he can play another 3 years.  extending him could save the team about $5m per year.  Cutting him outright would save the team about $21m. In the most drastic situation, we have to cut Moton and the other three players mentioned.   We would need (in all likelihood) a starting DT and RT.  It is possible that the DE would be addressed, but Wharton's production (so far) could be equaled by a rookie.  Look for a cut free agent and a 2027 draft pick here.  If you cut Moton, you save $21m, and that would be the only big hole to fill.  Having Ickey at RG gives you some depth at T, and Ickey could be the guy.  T could be pick in the 2027 draft (first round), fwiw.  It saves you $21m while costing you $5m, for example. We get younger, creating a core of Freeling, Hecht, and the RT first rounder in 2027) along with Ekownu (second contract in the $15m range, and Lewis, whose contract would be in the $16m range if not extended.)  The OL cuts (Hunt, Moton) would save $40m.  The OL would get younger and still solid with veterans at G.   By cutting Wharton (no brainer if his play stays the same) and Moehrig (good player--but we have Ransom on a rookie contract who would not be that much of a drop off--if any) in addition to Hunt and Moton, we would save over $70m in cap room. We would be able to give Bryce bag  and we would have enough to re-sign Ickey (if the knee is not too risky) to a Guard contract (probably at a discount, coming off that injury).  Furthermore, we could add a RT in the draft (or a RG if Ickey moves to RT) and that would be the only large hole to fill. Correct my logic if you see issues-- On defense, in addition to the aforementioned, Scott ($2m contract) is out, replaced by a 4th round rookie contract. CB Jackson's contract ($7.8m) expires and he is (possibly) replaced by a rookie contract.  At Edge, patrick Jones II's $10m contract expires and he is likely a reserve, and his role is absorbed by Phillips, Scourton, Princely, and possible an UDFA like Isaiah Smith or a 2027 draft pick.   These productive developmental players over the past 2 drafts will pay huge dividends.  On paper, I see the team getting much younger and possibly better while cutting nearly $100m and reallocating that money to get more production.
