panthers address stumbling running game

Anyone who has paid much attention to Rivera since we hired him as a coach probably knew the O-Line was getting hammered in meetings but it's fun to see them admit it. Despite the fact that I think there are tangible reasons why our run game has not materialized yet a coach who thinks like ours does is not likely to give them that same leeway.

2 Major things are messing our running game up.

No Chemistry with the O-line due to new players and injuries.

and Geof Hangartner. There is a reason why the Buffalo Bills are now a much better running team. We really need to Upgrade that spot next year.

This is why I only liked Hangartner as depth and not as a starter. I wish we would have picked someone that could both run block and pass block instead of starting guys based off of sentimental value.

Rewatched the game and paid close attention to the offensive line especially on run plays, and Hangartner got no push whatsoever, It didn't matter if it was Raji or whoever they penetrated pass him as if he was a wet paper towel.

We definitely need to shore that up, the only thing that is holding this offense back from being truly elite is a competent running game, and that simply shouldn't be with all the money we have tied up and the studs we have in the backfield.

General consensus is that the O line needs time to gel and develop chemistry. Through the first 2 games we have not had a consistent right side. Before we throw Hangman under the bus lets see how things develop. Last year we started off slow in the running game but things improved. Hopefully the same thing happens this year.

I really don't know why they won't test Ziemba at the RG spot.

I have been wondering the same thing. I don't think Ziemba has the feet to play tackle in the NFL, but it's obvious that he's a mauler. IDK, maybe he's struggling to pick of the offense or he doesn't want to change positions. That's kind of crazy though, since he was a low draft pick...those guys need to be doing whatever it takes to help the team and stay in the league.

To me, it sounds as though for the FIRST time this season, the coaching staff is concentrating on the running game. I personally think this was by design. Let Cam awe other teams, and get the 8 out of the box. Now we can open up the flood gates and start running it. What better way to fire up that line than to issue a challenge to them.

Gross has said himself after the GB game, that He really "doesn't understand why they haven't run it more, especially in the RZ"

Like I said, I think this was a calculated move by the coaching staff. A "shock and awe" move with the passing game to put teams on notice by saying... "We have a quarterback, and he's a fuggin weapon" so stop loading the box, because we will hurt you!

I still see us as a pass first team with Chud running the O, but obviously our running game wiling a force to be reakoned with.

Once we can get a balance and have teams guessing... We'll be damn near unstoppable. Think about it

    • This guy pre-draft was saying he could take or leave football, and he seems to have been playing with that mentality ever since lol.
    • Agreed, another safety would be nice. Bud Clark, TCU, is one I would like to see us take a flyer on later in the draft, if he stays healthy and we don't take someone earlier. I just really hope we draft a solid C this year. Tired of seeing us cycle through average to below average players in that area.
    • Bryce doesn't like throwing into the middle of the field unless the play broke down or it's set up to give him a passing lane.  So because of this issue, most of the passing offense has to be outside the numbers towards the boundary. So you see him throw a lot of dump offs, swing routes, short side out routes, comebacks or deep balls outside the numbers using the boundary as protection of an interception.    Pretty easy for a NFL defense to see this and scheme against it.  All you have to do is run a shell cover 2 deep dime, LB plays a hook underneath, take the flat away with a blitz/flat zone option for the two inside DB's, outside two DB's play hook zone underneath and carry anything deep.    Pretty much what NO ran to take away Rico while also limiting What Bryce can do as well.
