Panthers moving to a 3-4??? Says McDerm

Switching to a 3-4 is just a bad idea. We don't have the personal and it would set us back even farther than we are now.

Yes. Switching to a 3-4 now would be a disaster. And if there is one thing we don't want it is our defense to be a disaster. /sarcasm

In the future would make sense........Carolina pretty much as nothing upfront on D. Charles Johnson is big and good enough to play the DE spot in a 3-4 and Beason can fit as well.

Outside of those 2.....the only person that really gets hurt my it is Greg Hardy.

The reason our defense is a disaster is because of injuries. At full health, we can hold our ground. Switching schemes would be a disaster for years to come. You don't just flip a switch and everything is good to go. Switching schemes takes time and the right personal, which we do NOT have. And if you think we do, pass over what you're smoking.

I told myself I wouldn't step foot back in here for the rest of the season, but this thread interests me.

Move to the 3-4 is the right move. The 4-3 just ain't working, folks. You don't keep trying something that is killing you. If we move to a 3-4 and it fails, we're in the EXACT same spot we're in now and if it isn't looking promising, we jump back in the 4-3.

I love our linebackers for it. Anderson and Connor in the middle with Williams and honestly, Norwood, on the outsides. Anderson and Norwood playing strong side, Williams and Connor playing weak side.

We rotate guys in at the NT until we find the right one. I think McClain will do a better job than Fua, but I wouldn't mind seeing Kearse in there either. He's a big body.

Ends are obvious, Johnson and Hardy. To the people saying Hardy is too small...don't Indy run the 3-4? Dwight Freeney does fine.

I like move. Gives us more options for zone-blitzing schemes and it gives us the opportunity to get guys flying downhill making tackles rather than having our front 4 pushed back into the LBs every play.

Write-up from the Observer:

Panthers using more 3-man fronts

At his introductory press conference in January, Ron Rivera mentioned the possibility of mixing in the 3-4 with the Panthers' traditional 4-3 scheme.

In a Week 6 loss at Atlanta, the Panthers unveiled the look for three plays. Two were successful, one resulted in a long run for the Falcons.

But it sounds like the Panthers will continue to use the 3-4 and could possibly evolve into a base 3-4 team by next season. Before arriving in Carolina, Rivera ran the 3-4 as San Diego's defensive coordinator.

“I know he feels very confident in the 3-4 and what it brings to the table. And knows its strengths and weaknesses. And he has shared them with me,” said defensive coordinator Sean McDermott, who ran the 4-3 in Philly. “That's part of the reason, quite frankly, that I came down here – so we could get together and merge our systems together. I think in due time you'll see that and you'll see the effectiveness of both.”

Against the Falcons, Carolina used defensive ends Charles Johnson and Antwan Applewhite as stand-up, outside linebackers, and lined up James Anderson and Dan Connor at inside linebacker.Ron Fields lined up as the nose guard, although rookie Frank Kearse has experience there, too.

Applewhite, who was with Rivera in San Diego, likes the scheme as a change-up. But Applewhite said the Panthers would need an offseason to install it if they wanted to make it their base defense.

Our healthy defense didn't hold their ground in the preseason or week 1 so I don't know about that.

As I said earlier I doubt that they "flip a switch" and go 3-4. It would be implemented piece by piece over several weeks. And likely wouldn't be our base formation until next season if that truly was the direction Rivera wanted to go.

And right now we don't have the personnel to run a 4-3 either.

I just think it's a bad idea. But as someone stated above, Rivera knows better than me.

EDIT: and I can't believe I misspelled personnel in two separate posts.

    • we have been bad offensively basically every game Rico Dowdle hasn't gone full Tecmo Bowl Bo Jackson on folks.
    • Strongly disagree with the premise here. Without getting too into it, the biggest gripe for many has always been his footwork and pocket presence.  Shallow drops, happy feet, bad awareness - his overall technique is highly unconventional and not beneficial to his size/frame.  His upper body gets mad out of sync with his lower, drops back parallel to the LOS, erratic behavior. When you take that to the NFL level, you get swallowed up. And he got shellshocked and started bailing way too soon on plays. Unnecessary throwaways when he should step UP into the pocket and hit.   He got away with it in school because sooo much of his work was out of structure or quick hits to Jamo.  He was able to not bail early and stick in the pocket this last game. He also was dropping deeper than he usually does to create sight lanes. He can’t really outrun DLs so he needs to create that space via drop to survey properly. When he does these bs skip hops in the gun, he barely drops and is flooded. He needs to stay active with his feet but learn to step into the pocket more.  His average arm when he’s not doing this right turns Pennington esque.
