Players Under Contract For 2012

The first number indicates the players total cap hit for the 2012 season. This includes base salary, pro-rated signing bonuses and typically met roster/workout/option bonuses. I didn't include incentives as it's too early to calculate earned vs. unearned. The Panthers don't rely heavily on incentives anyway, so any adjustments should be minor.

The number in parentheses is the cap hit the Panthers would take for trading or cutting that player. This cap hit can be spread out over 2012 and 2013 if the player is cut/traded after June 1st or taken entirely in 2012 if moved before that date. Note I am not suggesting cutting or trading anyone, just showing this for reference.

Contract numbers were all verified, though I got conflicting reports on a few. The differences were minimal though, so if numbers aren't 100% accurate they should be extremely close.

Estimated Cap Space

The 2012 cap is based on 2011 earnings (using formulas so complicated I'm not even going to get into) so it's too early to calculate the exact number. It's estimated that the 2012 cap will be roughly $125 million.

The total for our players already under contract is $116,842,357.

Projecting our draft position using the current standings and adding a 4% increase to contracts from the previous year (in line with the rise in salary cap) it's estimated that our new draft picks should count $8.54 million against the 2012 cap.

37 current players under contract and 6 draft picks gives us a total of 43 players. Filling out the roster at a bare minimum cost (10 UDFAs at the rookie minimum) would count an addition $3.9 million against the cap.

Total cost: $129,282,357

Projected 2012 cap space: $4.28 million OVER the cap.

I was planning on adding estimates on what it would cost to resign our own free agents based on current salaries (among other things) but I got sh*t to do, might add this in later.

Based on those numbers we will have to do some soul searching and let loose of some guys currently on the roster and starting go unless we can restructure some contracts.I would stsrt the cut with olindo mare.Thomas Davis will have to restructure to keep a roster spot.DW should also restructure based on his performace and Jeff Otah should be gone. I ee some guys that I think are getting overpaid

Looks like they structured D-will's money in a way that allows us to keep him and J-stew for the next 2 seasons.

Or allows us to cut D-will in 2 years when J-stew is up for his payday. J-stew would likely be franchised that season because of the low running back cap hit.

With that being said, with the type of offense we are running, Goodson could have done D-wills role bunches cheaper.

In any event, if we want someone bad enough we will go get them.

However, I wouldn't expect anything major.

I don't believe this is true. Williams got a 16 mill signing bonus which we will take the hit for that if we were to cut or trade him. The other 5 mill of his guaranteed money was guaranteed salary for 2012. We eat that if we cut him but I believe it goes to the team that takes him in trade. Basically, we take the hit for prorations. Guranteed salaries are not prorated but could be converted to signing bonus which would change that.

I think Richardson handing out all these huge contracts was more of a message that he's not cheap than anything. We basically set the market for a lot of positions. D Williams contract, Ryan Kalil being highest paid center in the league, Godfrey getting tons of cash. Not to mention Johnson, Beason, Anderson, etc. Although several of those contracts make perfect sense.

But yeah, after 2010 and basically tanking everything until the new CBA came along... Richardson wanted to let us all know that he is definitely trying to win again.
