Cam Newton Blames JaMarcus Russell And Vince Young For The Disrespect He Gets

i'm not reading through all of the almost 100 comments, but i do find it hilarious that so many people who were scolding others for over-analyzing comments cam makes and criticizing them are doing the very same thing themselves.

if you don't want people reading between the lines of what cam says, quit doing it yourself.

Seems to me that Newton felt that Russell and Young both had great athletic ability but were lazy and took things for granted. I would agree with him. He doesn't see it as a black/white issue. I am not sure I would be so charitable but understand where he is coming from. He thinks anybody who doesn't work hard to be the best he can be doesn't deserve what they have been given. I agree with him on that.

As for Luck, I do think he has been overhyped. Is he is great as everyone says he is??? Could anybody be that good??? It isn't his fault that he has been annointed as a sure thing. It sure puts pressure on him though. Pressure I doubt he would want at this point.

I'm not sure if someone has pointed this out already (I didnt read the whole thread) but...

The Jamarcus Russell comparisons that were thrown around all over the place before and after the draft last year were the absolute epitome of laziness. The play NOTHING alike. I think a lot of it has to with people assuming Jamarcus was a running QB because he is black, but he was NEVER good at running with the ball. He had fewer rushing yards in college than Brady fuging Quinn (the other QB of that draft). BRADY QUINN.

The only things Jamarcus and Cam had in common is they were black QBs picked #1. Its absolutely embarrassing that there were "experts" making that comparison

tbh, the only time I heard any of the "respectable" comparing Cam to Russell was during his pro day - and several of them did the same to Gabbert (and did the same to Bradford the year before). This had to do with the fact that a good pro day did not mean that a quarterback would deliver in the field. Though it's possible Mayock said something about him being complacent like Russell or something but I never really understood that. My concerns with him really weren't based on work ethic.

I know a lot of others did throw around "He'll be another Russell!" but I don't think anyone with half a brain really thought that the two were similar.

Far as I know, Vince Young only signed a one year deal with the Eagles. If he re-ups, we play them next year in Philly. Expect this story to get dragged out if that's the case.

Kudos to him for trying to put the race stuff to bed. Not so sure he should have named names, especially not one that's still an active player. He may well be right about Young, but it still would have been better not to name him.

I've begun to get the impression that Newton is one of those guys who has an unfortunate habit for unintentionally saying things that stir the pot. David Carr was bad about that too. Delhomme, on the other hand, was pretty much always able to deftly avoid controversy.

He's young. It happens. Not a big deal to me as long as it doesn't rile any of his teammates.

I have to say most every big time player has done this at some point.. I look at it as young men being young men...

especially the last few years... It seems to me most guys go through these lessons early on, what I hope for is that our guy learns from it...

for instance, this past interview that didn't sit well with his teammates, and now they are joking about his lion references..

It's a sign of a good working relationship when they can come to him and say "you shouldn't have said that" or "said it that way" and then joke about it afterward.

Veteran leadership is sometimes more important than people give credit for.

Also worth noting that good on-field performance buys you a lot of leeway. If a guy like, say, Ryan Leaf makes a comment that offends teammates, he gets a "shut up douchebag" :sosp:

Cam Newton was perpetrated as an immature black kid with numerous character issues. He was mobile enough to be draft worthy, but so raw and flawed in technique to never truly impact. He wasn't smart enough to run a complex offense, and was never going to truly succeed.

Thanks Jamarcus and Vince...I give props to Cam for being honest and not giving a fug. I mean let's face it, Cam Newton is a black QB the NFL had never seen. He wants the world to know that being black is second or third or last to his passion for the game and ability to play it.

When someone gets into a scuffle to defend family after they tried their best to diffuse the situation, it tells you something about their character.

When someone has numerous resources around them to make them succeed, including mandatory tutors, and they turn in a paper they bought online, it also tells you something about their character.

I'll let you decide what conclusions to draw from those actions.

A couple "L" words come to mind to describe each.
