Rebuilding the D

I believe the actual, pertinent quote was something along the lines of "We'll stay 4-3 and mix in 3-4 looks in to confuse opposing offenses."

there is another quote running around somewhere (and without a functional search button, I'm not looking for it) where Rivera clearly wanted to switch to a 3-4 eventually....

how soon is yet to be determined, but the quote you're referring to was referencing a switch "this year"...

All I found was this in google.

I think bleys was referring to this:

On if the 3-4 could evolve into the Panthers base defense: It can evolve as giving us some answers. If a team sits there and you get in an over front and they take the tight end and move him back and move him across, they can dictate what you've got to do. If we come out and we line up like this and they want to change the tight end, we can dictate to them. It gives us options is what it does. To talk about it as being a base might be a little premature. The big thing to do is we'd have to get a couple more linebackers like an Antwan Applewhite. What's happening right now is he gives us opportunities and options, and I think that's probably the biggest thing. You don't want to get too heavy with those kinds of guys, because certain other positions become obsolete.

Doesn't sound like that is definite but it sounds as if it was under consideration back in October.

i'm just going to jump on the wagon and say you are wrong.

he's a 4-3 guy.

it won't be rebuilt.

we will show a good number of 3-4 looks among a lot of other looks, but we are a 4-3 base D. considering who we have that won't likely change any time soon.

Can a 3-4 OLB like Jarvis Jones of UGA (weighs around 230) transition to a 4-3 OLB easily enough?

Cuz that kid is a baller and if he came out would seemingly be picked high.

they will show both 3-4 and 4-3.

With our personal, it is obvious the 4-3 will remain the base defense. Rivera said so himself.

I''m still not confident in mcdermett.

Would be more comfortable with rivera calling the defense....but whether he'll take that on as a head coach or not, is yet to be seen.

The defense doesn't need as much as people think. Have to get better production (pass rush & run defense) from our front 4. Specially interior.

Could use another talanted safety in the secondary.

Hard to know if they'll go CB until we know more about the rookie who didn't play.

Long off season.

McD and Rivera both suggested earlier in the year that in the future we might use much more 3-4, in some ways making it sound like it'd become our "base defense."

I do not think the switch would destroy this defense at all, but CJ/Hardy/Beason really are better fits for a 4-3. They can play in a 3-4, but I think they are best utilized in a 4-3.

To your point. This was a quote from Rivera in the next paragraph in the article Teeray referenced.

On if down the road he wants the Panthers base defense to be a 3-4 or a 4-3 with 3-4 tendencies: Right now because of the personnel we have we're looking at a 4-3 with the tendencies. With a Charles Johnson and a Greg Hardy, it makes no sense. You don't want to take Charles and put him in a position where he could potentially drop (into pass coverage) every play or every other play. If he drops (now), it's off of a zone pressure and it's once in awhile. But tendencies to give them different looks, now all of a sudden they've got to prepare for a 4-3, they've got to prepare for a 3-4. What we're trying to do is create some options and opportunities.

3-4 defense:

DE: Charles Johnson and Greg Hardy

DT: Terrell McClain

OLB: Davis? Anderson, Senn

ILB: Beason and Connor

Man tell me i am a Genius! That would solve our D line problems

McClain as the NT? My god he doesn't even weigh 300 lbs and he didn't show me too much this year.

I would have concerns about Johnson and Hardy holding their own on the edges against double teams, particularly with Hardy. He can't even hold the edge in a 4-3. But assuming you are right, your OLBs aren't big enough to shed blocks and still make tackles. You need guys like Applewhite who are bigger yet can play in space. I suspect Connor will be gone given he wants to start and here he would be a backup. I think Beason and Davis/Anderson would play the ILBs and we would have to get a couple of OLBs.
