John Abraham = Al Wallace can we make it happen?

He made 8 million salary in 2011 and counted 10 million against the cap. What do you think it would take to land him this year?? I suspect that a 3 year deal would have to be in the 15 million range to land him. he is like Jason Williams was a few years ago, not in his prime but not washed up yet either.

I doubt we try and sign him. He doesn't fit in with our general youth movement.

Ron Edwards didn't fit our youth movement either, or Shockey.

No, waste of cap. Need to re-sign a few players and get decent depth at other positions. I doubt you will see more than one major free agent acquisition from outside the organization. I bet someone unexpected has a breakout season for us. One of our no-name players, I mean. Hopefully someone on defense, hopefully a DT. But you never know.

Off gate Abe gives us leadership and a nasty pass rush. 2 things we didn't have last year.

Think about this line-up on Passing downs Abe, CJ, Hardy, with either Mcclain or who ever we draft at DT.

Edwards was brought in to help the 2 rookies and fill a hole while Shockey was brought in to actually produce himself and be a physical presence. But they were here to help make up for the lack of veterans we had because we gutted the team in 2010. As we move forward though, those rookies and backups are gaining experience and developing into veterans meaning that we don't have to keep bringing in older veterans to mentor them. So while we brought in a few last year, I don't know if we continue with the trend this year and in the future.

I would actually like to bring in Abraham on a 2 or 3 year deal as long as the guaranteed money was low. I personally like veterans with experience.

I agree I would love to see him in the Al Wallce role. Coming in on passing down and making hell for QB.

For some reason, this reminds me of the Chuck Smith signing

Abraham is injured a lot, he is inconsistent, often racking up multiple sack games against weaker opponents and disappearing in others. He has terrorized Gross and the Panthers, so this is a bit like Smith, who was a beast vs. Carolina. So....

I would get him on the cheap if I could, and use him as a situational pass rusher. I would only do this if I planned to keep 5 DEs on the roster.

I think our need at DE is for a run-stopping player who can get some pressure on the passer. Keiser is a bit light for that. Hardy will not do it. Applewhite is not bad for his size, but has like 7 sacks in 5 years.

Al Wallace was a solid rotation guy who was not paid a ton.

Abraham would demand way too much money. And I believe that he will stay in Atlanta if he were willing to take a smaller contract.

No way you get him here for a great deal.

Too much money, Too old.

Stay the course. We are building through the draft, getting younger players experience, our franchise QB just completed his rookie year. If we can get a veteran guy "cheaply" then great. Especially if it's to mentor younger players, however if not then keep sticking to plan.

I don't see how Wallace and Abraham are similar. Wallace was in his 5th year when he came to the Panthers, had never started a game, and hadn't played much in his previous 4 seasons. Abraham has played extensively for 12 seasons and is quite well known.

Regardless, I would be happy with him for what little this team could afford to pay him. The ideal situation would be to find another player more similar to Wallace.....younger, cheaper

    • No matter what we still need a QB2 with potential to be a QB1. Keep throwing QBs at the wall until we find someone who sticks.
    • Lot of different agendas dictating opinions.  I don’t think it was the best use of money with Hunt, specifically, but the concept of OL, I am a fan. I didn’t complain a ton because I am a believer in winning up front, on both sides of the ball. I’d rather have stout fronts than fancy WRs. I have complained some about Hunt not being worth his deal, after seeing him get pushed around in a game or two. It’s no crusade. And have complained in the context of shorting the defense.   They have leveled out the FA imbalance with the dual big signings this offseason, and it has always been the draft picks I am most protective of. Anyway The picks are the real imbalance. If you did a trade chart value of the picks we directly gave up for Bryce, and added the support picks invested for skill players, and put that on one side… then put the little 3 3rd rounders and a 2nd that the defense got over three years on the other it would be hugely out of balance. I just want the balance restored. Defense is still owed.
    • I'm one of the ones that won't let it go because it didn't solve the problem. We didn't address the center position which was a huge mistake. We were in position to easily take 2 or the top IOL. Instead of drafting JPJ over XL or Frazier over Brooks, we relied on an oft injured guard to center conversion and lo and behold, it failed as predicted. XL looks like a 1 year college wonder and an injured Brooks hasn't even surpassed Eric Shelton.  Bryce was also benched for poor performance, so the issue that many claimed was solely bad oline play wasn't. It didn't fix him bailing out of tight pockets because of being unable to see the field or him refusing to work on his atrocious footwork. Then there's the $$$. Lewis got a good guard payday. Hunt got a tackle payday. Pay tackles, draft guards, if you can.  I have no issues addressing problems through FA. It was not addressing C at all that's been the issue and still has been. Ryan Kalil was the anchor of our offensive line. We had years of solid center play and it showed. Now we're still piecemealing the center position with an expensive oline and it's still a shitshow. Why? Because the player responsible for what happens on the line presnap has little to no experience doing it. We did acquire a FA center this year finally. We'll see how much that impacts the line.  Spending on a center, whether it be through draft or FA is not bad. It's not a position that can have anyone just thrown in with no drop off in performance. A great center lifts the play of the guards on each side.  I don't like how we've built the line because we've ignored the hinge pin that everyone counts on every play. And the reality of the situation is, it didn't solve the actual problems with Bryce because those have nothing to do with the oline.
