Eliminating Kickoffs In The Near Future?

with the new kickoff spot, might as well just remove it. 4/5 times its just a touchback and forces us to watch another segment of shitty beer commercials.

Disagree - it means that a team, with a good special teams unit, can gamble for a bigger return. It also keeps onside kicks there. It makes a kicker with a big leg more valuable at neutralizing a good special teams. Though it does make kickoffs less interesting, I think overall the kickoff still has a place even if it is not as exciting as it once was.

The real question is if it lowered the number of kickoff related injuries... We won't know that for sure for another couple seasons I suspect.

The NFL is in a really bad situation. It's a barbaric gladiator sport in a soft peaceful age.

Right now the NFL is being sued by former players that consented to put their bodies in harms way for monetary gain. Jim Brown would run over Joe Linebacker. So Joe Linebacker has troubling thinking in his 60s and decided to sue the NFL. Shouldn't he sue Jim Brown? Of course not the NFL has more money!

So now the NFL tries to protect their business by increasing safety precautions on game day. These players that complain about the league being to soft will be filing suits against the NFL in 25 years.

The problem is you can tweak the rules here and there but you cannot change the mentality of an NFL player. One of the most valuable traits of football is the conviction players compete with.

I hate the rule changes but reality is the NFL will go bankrupt when some libtard judge holds them responsible for lifelong debilitating injuries. What's next? They will start suing the universities for careers that never came to fruition because of injuries.

The one thing I will say is I do not take pleasure in watching a grown man lay unconscious on the field. It makes me sick to my stomach. If that's something you feel like is missing from the game you really need to rethink your values. I love old school football but it cannot function in today's society.

Hell Goodell mind aswell get rid of STs altogether and put flags on the offense and just play flag football. Goodell is such a Douchebag. He is just ruining the game of football. But thanks to the owners. They extended his contract for another 5 dam years. Screw Goodell and Nazi ways of football. Down with Goodell!!

The NFL just needs to for once and for all implement and enforce rules about what protective gear to wear and how to wear it.

There are helmets for example that dramatically reduce concussion risk, but the NFL doesn’t require players to wear them.

Changing rules about how the game is played is coming at the problem from the wrong angle.

they practically eliminated it already last year when they moved the kickoff spot anyway. I don't agree with Mara but if they don't plan on moving the kickoff back to where it was, what's he difference. It's only a legit factor in the game when 90% of kicks don't soar through the end zone.

I am sure there is a study out there that compares injuries to special teamers last year to the years before and "proves" the improvements to player safety the rule change made. So I don't look for the kickoff spot to be changed back. The studies I anticipate to be on the horizon will refer to how much safer the players are when there aren't any playoffs, regular seasons, or full contact practices. Until the league does that, the players will never be truly safe. Only a matter of time.

    • Trade up for a project was dumb, he's gonna be 25 next month. By the time you're deciding on whether he's worth the 5th year option or a big contract you're already gonna be thinking about moving on soon either way.
    • I mean this is legit AF statement....you don't spend that draft capital on a project just like you don't trade up for an injured RB either, which was done in the same draft.  That draft IMO was a necessary evil for DM to learn from his mistakes (I think he did but some may not). Also I have to mention I'm a big Coker fan and think getting him as an UDFA was obv a steal.  Coker is the better WR2 at this point as Legette and its not even debatable unfortunately.  Give him year 3 but don't expect much from him.  Continue in the offseason with adding as much talent and competition on the roster as possible including WR.  Or just trade his ass for peanuts and continue to build roster by any means.......
    • Losing him was a huge loss. Look at how the Bears went from a 5 win team to now a 11 win team. The Lions offensive line is bad this year, secondary is bad and Campbell going for it on 4th down all the time has cost them games instead of taking the Field Goals. Goff is inconsistent as well.
