Something Sort Of Unusual About This Panthers Draft

It seems like every year (that we have a first round pick at least), there is a prospect a couple of weeks before the draft that gets mentioned as a guy that we really like and are really wanting to draft.

It happened with Deangelo (lucky he was there), Jon Beason, Jonathan Stewart, Cam Newton, and I'm sure it goes back farther than that.

My point is, this year I don't think I've heard anything about a single prospect that we really like. I mean there were rumors that we loved Kuechly but it was kind of a flash in a can.

Am I missing who this 1st round prospect is this year, or are they really being more secretive than usual? Just thought I'd see if anyone else noticed that.

I remember specifically the draft year we got Beason, right before the draft we heard the Panthers loved him and wanted to draft him. People here on the boards blew it off or were like "yeah maybe in the 2nd round". Then we traded down and got him.

I remember that Fox and Hurney went to dinner with Deangelo the year we drafted him and everyone was calling for a "power back", and saying we wanted Lendale White. Every indication was we wanted Deangelo but weren't sure if he would be there when we picked but he was, and we drafted him.

We were enamored with Stewart in the draft, but also we needed a tackle badly. People were confused and saying there is no way we draft him because we had D-Will. But the leak was right and we drafted him.

It just seems a leak of that nature comes out every year we have a 1st rounder and I haven't seen that yet. I guess there is one more week though.

To me it is Cox this year. Hurney went on interviews and said we weren't bringing him in for an interview when they already had. They then brought him in again, this time for a 2-day interview/meetings. A lot of places and people are mocking him to us now. I fully expect Cox to be the pick if he is there. Only other option I can even see happening is Coples.

I think its different from years past b/c #1 we have a new coach and he has some insight as to who he wants to draft. Seems Rivera and Hurney are looking at a wide range of players. Also, our draft spot could allow us to trade back if we wanted to. Even if we had a favorite, dont think we would make it clear just for that purpose.

Actually the Cox thing made no sense at all. Why would we say we weren't interested in a guy if we had already brought him in and then bring him in for 2 days right after that. Unless we were trying to appear we had early onset of Alzheimer's or we had sudden change of heart, it seems totally incongruous. By bringing him in, we obviously must like him, but why say we didn't? It isn't as if we would be fooling anyone by saying one thing and doing another. And we aren't the Saints so we don't usually lie. Very strange.

they really like Stephon Gilmore. he'll probably be the pick if we don't find a trade partner to move down

Could be the winner!!!

Gilmore is being compared to GB's Charles Woodson. In a pass happy league and especially in our conference, the pick might be CB in 1st and DT in second rather than the reverse. Never know

    • This is always a non-story by the time camp begins.
    • I've really only begun to pay attention this week being that training camp is looming, so I was personally caught off guard by the fact that Nic Scourton remains unsigned. That's not necessarily bad news, but it's not necessarily good news either. Apparently it's a thing with this year's draft class. "Of the 32 players selected in the second-round, 30 remained unsigned and the clock is ticking. "Already we've seen one second-round pick hold out from the start of training camp with that player being Los Angeles Chargers' wide receiver Tre Harris. Harris did not report with the rest of the Chargers' rookies on Saturday due to his contract situation, a issue that could impact nearly every other team in the league. "For the Panthers, defensive end Nic Scourton is the player to watch for when rookies start showing back up to the team facilities next week. "The 51st overall pick is one of the 30 second-rounders who has yet to sign their rookie contract and the reason why is due to the other two that have actually signed. "Cleveland Browns' linebacker Carson Schwesinger and Houston Texans' wide receiver Jayden Higgins each signed fully guaranteed contracts as the first and second players drafted in the second-round. Prior to this year, second-round picks never received a fully guaranteed deal, only players selected in the first-round." https://atozsports.com/nfl/carolina-panthers-news/panthers-nic-scourton-contract-second-round-pick-training-camp-hold-out-tre-harris/ So, I suppose we'll see what's what pretty soon. It's definitely something to monitor.
    • overwhelming majority of kids in travel ball aren't getting scholarships though because most teams are rec caliber (and not watched by scouts)    and parents/leagues sort of helped create this system and narrative IMO where travel ball is now oversaturated and most of it is simply expensive rec ball.  is travel beneficial for some athletes to get more exposure? Sure. The ones travel actually existed for.   I still think travel has expanded entirely too broad at this stage......where they will now have 5 teams per year in your backyard area pending they can get parents to write those checks.   Ain't no scout ever laying eyes on 90%+ of the kids in travel ball at this stage of where it has morphed into.
