Our Weaknesses: Post-Draft Edition

Now that we've had the chance to sign and draft, from an on-the-field standpoint what are the weaknesses of the Carolina Panthers?

A lot of this can't truly be assessed until we see how things turn out, but for speculation's sake:

  • Special teams. Even though we're good on punt returns (I thought Pilares was good anyway but now we have options) we haven't added much and last year was the worst special teams unit I've ever seen. I held my breath for every punt. Am I missing injuries here?
  • Secondary. I hope we score 50 points a game.
  • Cam's experience. He handled himself on the national stage just fine in college, but can he stay cool if we do make it to the playoffs? Experiencing is the only remedy for lack of experience, but it's still a question mark. Most teams in the league have an advantage over us here.

Feel free to add your own. I mostly want everyone else's thoughts.

I'm sorry but the one thing we are better at is special teams. Just plugging Thomas Davis OR Kuechly there makes us better. Plus our punter should be pretty good according to R.R.

Carolina has brought in several highly touted special teamers thus far....

I'd rather Kuechly play ST, putting Thomas Davis there is pretty much asking for another ACL tear.

Speical teams got better than any other aspect of the team this off-season, IMO.

I think the main areas I'm concerned about are:

  • DL is a major concern, even tho the LBs will make them appear better, they need to really step up, esp. in the interior line.
  • Secondary, but they may end up being okay if the DL & safeties play better (yes, I know safeties are grouped in 2ndary!).
  • WR is still a question, but I think they will be fine if LaFell or Gettis can really make impact at #2 position.

It will be a fun year, our D was in shambles last year & STs was a joke. We have had a solid off-season.

I would say other than Gamble, we still have no proven number two corner. I don't think pass rush or DT will as much of a problem this year.

Every team in our division has multiple receivers that can hurt you. We don't have multiple guys to cover them

We added some free agents and rookies who should improve our special teams.

We have a couple of 1st and 2nd year DBs who should improve our secondary.

We improved our OL, so our great RB duo (plus cam) should have more room to run. That will take the heat off of the passing game, which will see the return of Gettis, along with a good new rookie.

      Nina King continues to run circles around the rest of college basketball. She's been ahead of the curve on everything, and is the biggest reason for Duke's success post-K IMO. I think Scheyer is great at many things, but Duke went into the NIL era 100% ready whereas everyone else was playing catchup.

      Happy they won convincingly instead of letting them hang around. Montreal is cooked, and rather than play hockey, they've decided to take some really cheap shots at guys. I get a player may feel a need to set the tone, and I understand how that works. But to 2-hand cross check someone intentionally in the face, to have a guy down on the ice and put his head into the ice with a stick, to just start punching anyone who gets within arm's reach- that's not setting the tone. That is nothing short of playing dirty.  That said, the Canes.... oh boy. They could have run this score to 6-0 with half a power play. It's embarrassing how bad the PP is. If the Canes go to the Cup finals against a team who scores at least 1 goal per game on the PP, they'll lose the close games because of the lack of results on the PP.
