Panthers. . .or Secret Agents?

The Panthers are not taking many chances regarding their new wrinkles for 2012. Approaching the door at Bank of America Stadium Thursday, one could hear the shouts of players staging a walk-through in the large corridor. As soon as a reporter entered to walk to the media room, the players paused. When the coast was clear, action resumed: “Red Zone … let's go …”

Good, we've been way too open for way too long when practicing and I'm sure it's hurt us many times in the past.

Under the Fox administration, even when they had the tarps up you could walk right up to the fence surrounding the practice fields and watch what was going on (as evidenced by my previous "practice observations" threads).

During one of the first "closed" practices I attended last year, I tried the old "peek through the fence" trick and was immediately chased away by good ol' JC (security guy) who apologized and told me the coaches would yell at him if they saw someone peeking through the fence.

The next step is to put a bubble over one of the practice fields, so they don't have to deal with our next SB opponent renting an apartment across the street and video taping our practices like our last SB opponent did.

On the other hand, the stuff we were running under Fox was so vanilla (especially towards the end) that I'm not sure it mattered if our practices were being scouted... LOL

I swear to god that seemed like it was one of the main reasons he did it. . . ehhh totally unpredictable. . .lol smh.

As a QB he really cant make special teams contributions so it's nice to see him doing something besides sitting on the bench.

On another note with Rivera and Chud running the show we actually have quite a bit of trickery up our sleeves with scheming. Getting the guys familiar with these plays early and keeping it closed is only going to make it harder for teams to stop us. With Fox there was really no point in hiding anything. We were going to run the ball up the middle or off tackle. Occasionally switch it up with a toss or a draw play.

Foxy is fairly good at his own style of play, but it demands very particular personnel and multiple road graters in the trenches.

    • It appears that he sees things differently than the QB and OC, so Cam's advice is spot on. It isn't about number of targets, it's about quality of targets. Trust and being on the same page. BY doesn't know how to anticipate what XL is doing. And XL doesn't like where BY is placing passes. One on one film study would go a long way. More for BY than XL though. He has to adjust to XL. I really don't think XL can adjust on the fly.
    • If the team shows improvement, then he shouldn't be in danger of losing his job - even if the record doesn't reflect. This was a very young team (with a lot of new vet starters) that overperformed last season. Somebody's doing something right. Consistency is key with so much youth. And we're potentially looking at new starters at ILB and FS. Those are positions that take time to fully understand the defense. ILB calls the front 7. Safety calls the back 4. Injuries at WR and IOL killed the offense last season. Depth needs to be upgraded. Same with Edge. I think they would have won more games if Pat Jones doesn't go down early. Be smart with the roster and draft. Trade players for assets when it's time to pay them more than they're worth - yes, that includes BY if he doesn't make a pretty big jump. That's one of the many reasons Tillis is as important as anyone to the future of this team.
    • He had heart surgery a while back he looks Fraile I hope he is okay
