Finally got serious about lifting in January after about 1.5 years off (and had only lifted for one year prior) and have been making pretty good progress with 5-3-1 

 

This week got 275 on deadlift twice easily, so I said fug it and tried to go for 315 once ----I failed and was super pissed. my form is good, but i was crouching into my stance for a few seconds before trying to pull - whereas I've seen you should sort of bounce down into your stance and go immediately.

I also ended my leg day with 5 plates on leg press so I was pretty happy about that (have serious chicken legs and was pretty beat by that point) 

 

For reference, or for anyone that is just starting, when I started lifting I was very weak: couldn't bench 125, couldn't deadlift past 135 without my back seriously tightening up, couldn't squat poo, and couldn't overhead press 95.

 

While I haven't maxed on anything (besides trying to on deadlift the other day) my approx maxes are 190 on bench, 225 squat, 300 deadlift, and 115 overhead press

 

I'm 6'1" and weigh 165, trying to put on weight slowly.

So I've always been double jointed in both my elbows and shoulders so upper body are exercises are always a bit more difficult for me, but recently my left shoulder is feeling like its trying to separate when doing some exercises. Nothing has happened yet, it just feels weird and very weak for like an hour or two afterward my workouts and then back to normal.

Basically does anyone have a similar issue? Trying to figure out if this is normal or if I'm about to destroy my shoulder?

Should also say that while I have played at weight lifting in the past I have only been serious about it since December, and I had to take all of March off for sickness. So I only have about 3 months of serious work under my belt so far.

shoulders are a complicated joint. there's really no sure fire way to know what's going on without a whole slew of diagnostic tests. just back off a little on the weights and/or reps and build it back up. also, if you've done a lot of chest workouts and neglected your back, that'll cause a lot of shoulder issues.

 

also, try some mobility exercises like:

pass throughs

or doorway stretches (after lifting)

I'll try that, I have a rotation I work on, and I have a day thats just for the back.

I am adding HIIT to my schedule, perhaps 3 times per week. Heard some really good benefits to it, actually it's amazing that I've gone this long without doing it.

Anyone who does HIIT that has any tips?

All i really do. I took about 5 wks off due to groin pull from hoops. Alas im contemplating hanging up the high tops for good.

Yep, I came down on someone's ankle while playing ball and chipped a bone in my ankle when I was about 20... That was enough for me to throw in the towel on sports like basketball, football and hockey. My ankle still acts up if I run for too long and calf raises are tough too.

I'm 27 now, and just try to stick to sports where it's impossible to get hurt like softball and golf.

I've pretty much quit playing ball like that too... it's just too easy to get hurt and takes too long for me to heal now.

 

 

I got a new squat PR yesterday... first time I've ever ventured over 405... tried 425 and got it pretty easy for 2.  I'd like to get 455 at least once in my life and I can say my combined squat and deadlift is 1000 lbs plus.

my back is fuged, bad enough my PT said I should steer clear of doing squats with a bar, but managed to start doing them back in december and was happy just squatting 180 last week.

    • If Horn stays healthy then Evero and the defense should be able to keep us in majority of the games this year. It'll all depend on how much Bryce and the offense improves. The main goal this year for us is to be playing competitive and meaningful football after thanksgiving.
