I think Newton's passing stats tailed off down the stretch because Steve Smith, Legedu Naanee, and Brandon LaFell simply weren't creating enough separation down the football field. Opponents were deathly afraid of Smith, using bracket coverage to keep him contained. Naanee was the weakest skill-position player on the field in both games I reviewed. A stiff, straight-line guy with little post-catch wiggle and zero vertical tools, Naanee was the only difficult-to-watch Panther.

What is clear: Newton is a dominant, game-breaking talent. Even when his wide receivers failed to create bomb opportunities, Newton's playmaking ability shined through. He accounted for six all-purpose touchdowns and 548 total yards in the two games, and Carolina scored 71 points. Newton is Roethlisberger-like with his ability to break free from two-arm tackles and fire off rocket balls after quickly setting his feet. There isn't a more exciting young player in football right now.

Not the first QB that would come to my mind when thinking of people to compare Cam to, but when you think about it, it strangely fits. At least in the regard that they are both big dudes who are hard to bring down. Cam's got the toughness of Big Ben with the agility of Darren Sproles though.

The passing game leveled out because the run game improved and we relied on the option for more of our offense. For the most part we maintained our scoring average and that is the only offensive stat that really counts, points for. It doesn't really matter how you score them as long as you keep scoring particularly in the fourth quarter. That is where we have some work to do. We scored lots of points but couldn't always score when we needed to in order to win. If we are going to be a playoff team then we need to be an opportunistic and aggressive team on offense and defense. Something we didn't do enough of last year.

hes stats werent as good at the end of the season but it doesnt mean he wasnt as good..his stats went down because we used are run game and were winning so he didnt need to do as much

Cam could go this entire season without passing for 300 yards and it would be a good thing because our running game is clicking.

I think this was the point (or perhaps along the same lines of the same point) that Alex Smith was trying to make but came across as a semi inarticulate douche.

I don't think he's as tough as big ben. He really shows it on his face when he gets roughed up.

      I definitely respect your opinion more than Tracy McGrady, Vince Carter, and Carmelo Anthony (whom I just watched on their show, all saying NOBODY wants to get the Hornets in the post-season). You win.

      For all the good feelings about Bryce Young, when you read between the lines, it's what DC says and doesn't say that makes us know that Bryce hasn't necessarily been the supercomputer that they thought he would be. This season, Bryce has to make a tangible progression on the field. "A big part of it is being able to operate at the line of scrimmage — not in the huddle — when we want to, and he’s certainly capable of that," Canales said about Young. "It’s not solely on him. It’s a group that’s pretty young. You have to trust all the guys to go up there, communicate verbally or nonverbally and execute what we’re doing. We’ve made huge strides in that regard. His ability to alter things based on what they’re giving you will give us another edge, which he’s continued to grow and had some great examples down the stretch where he identified things they were doing, got us to the right check and capitalized on some plays. Want to see him do that more when it’s appropriate. We don’t need to be changing things just to change it." The implications, perhaps insinuations, are pretty evident. Bryce is just going to have to do better. "And then for Bryce, it’s the identification of early on the cues that the defense are giving us, to be able to eliminate parts of your progression before the ball’s even snapped. That happens with time. I’ve seen quarterbacks really own and master, which allows them to play lightning fast." Obviously Bryce isn't necessarily picking things up as fast as Canales would like, and I can only assume that Canales is making comparisons to Russell Wilson, Geno Smith and Baker Mayfield. But, of course, not everyone picks things up at the same rate. Bryce's pace has left Canales wanting for more. During the coming season, I don't believe that it will be good enough for Bryce to start putting things together in December, evidence of the light switch being on is going to have to show itself in September. Basically, it's really the moment that we've all been waiting for, the one that we thought should've happened earlier, the one that brings Bryce's accountability in the spotlight. On an off note, perhaps to that end, we should consider the possible implications upon the draft, but that's another story.
