NFC South Training Camp Battles

Recommended Posts

competitively, meaning most talent then yes, this would be our biggest battle. But to me, Anderson is the starter and a healthy Davis is a luxury. We have more important battles all across both sides of the ball that are more important. There is just no way we can consider Davis a full time starter this year.

I don't see a single starting position battle on offense, back ups and a 3rd, 4th and 5th WR spot won't get a lot of attention given the defensive woes and personnel available now.

The only spots on offense to me that merit no battle are: QB, #1WR, #1TE, FB, HB1&2, LT, RG(i guess) and C. We can assume the rookie has the LG on lock, but still RT, #2WR and #2TE. You don't see any battles or have any uncertainty at any of those positions? I see almost as many there as on defense. The #2TE and #3WR should play big roles in this offense, those to me merit battles.

The OL is settled IMO, Gross, Silatolu, Kalil, Hangartner and Otah/Bell when he goes down.

I'd bank on both Gettis and Barnidge to win those respective spots. Who is called the starter at RB is inconsequential as they'll split carries. Every "battle" on O is a back up spot.

D, on the other hand, features UT, CB 2, SS and maybe FS. Godfrey will retain his starting spot but I'm not sure about Martin. Someone may push Hardy for RDE but I doubt it.

Not so sure I'm on board with this. I think we have fine outstanding linebackers but our safeties are at borderline poo. That said I agree there is some room for creativity but I don't think we need to get carried away. I think in most cases if you show Drew Brees a 3-6-2 he will show you 6 points and a touchdown dance.

I was using the example to show that Rivera has more tools to play with this year. Just maybe, enough tools to actually build what he has envisioned all these years.

In most cases, if you show a QB an alignment for the first time he just may be a tad confused. Even Breez. Not every team can pick you apart like Breez or Rogers. Although it is getting to the point where there are a lot more that can than can't. A lot of good young QBs out there. The next generation is well represented.

We are not to the point where we have the CBs to line up with a team that can go 4 or 5 wides. So we have to find other ways to defend, and rush, the pass. Thankfully, not a lot of teams can line you up that way. But you still have to cover TEs and RBs, we have a few guys capable of managing that task.

I swear, sometimes I feel you have to spell things out to the nth degree around here. Gamble is a very good DB, put him on the other teams #1, and then go about confusing the QB. Sounds easy in my head.

It is just a thought that came to me. Do I feel it has merit? Why not? As a Defensive look there is the element of, what the hell am I looking at, in it. It gets more of your bigger athletes on the field. And with luck, it can mask our biggest weakness. Stopping the other team from throwing the damm ball so successfully.

I say, mix it in, mix it up, throw it out there, and see what works. With our D, why not? And GOOOOOO CATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm actually starting to think they'll kick Beason outside and put Luke at Mike. Regardless of TD's health I think you have to protect him by limiting his snaps. On short yardage I'd gladly sub TD for S Martin to have an extra sure tackler, thumper on the field.

i like that idea

    • When we have everyone playing like they should, we can win the Cup. That has been the biggest problem when we get to the playoffs, but this year seems to be fixed mostly. We could have had multiple if we had done this in the past.
    • Here we go Bryce Stan’s you should love this. Hell it may be one of you.  It has every cliche excuse and then some.  Unintentionally hilarious my limit was reached when he said Bryce had it hard because four play callers.
    • Luke goes in to the specifics of what he looked to accomplish in joint practices.  Basically they may work with someone on the opposing team to stress something they feel is a weakness in their own game in a different way that can be done with someone they are familiar with. That they can have predetermined stresses but since neither wants to get injured and it has absolutely no bearing on anything there is not the level of concern that would be in a preseason game.  He would also even chat with opposing OC.   It seems like an interesting nuance among the vets and savy pros.
