Yes, Clausen sucks, but he was the best pick and the right choice when we drafted him

Looking today Clausen was a GAWD awful pick, BUT, I think he was the best pick we could have possibly made in that particular situation. Was there much else to choose from?

We had a very obvious need at QB and he was supposed to be "the most NFL ready."

Lets take a look, I will highlight anyone who may have been a better choice. One last disclaimer, I believe the NFL Draft can be a crap-shoot. Lots of things can happen and there is not predicting the future, superstars can fizzle or rise.

Very thorough and thought out. I would have to agree with you when put into that perspective. I'm sure most wanted him to work out, but he just didn't. He just doesn't have it. Maybe a change in system/philosophy would help.

I think the best thing we could do for him is release him.

Sadly as mentioned, though everyone hoped he would work out, he didn't, But rather than just leave the guy alone he is the favorite kicking toy for this forum.

Seems to me the best way would be to simply ignore him rather than continue to belittle a man who despite his failure in the NFL to date has tons more talent that anyone here commenting on how bad he is, or how his mother should regret giving birth, or all of the other snide remarks that get made. Serves no purpose to continue to insult the guy.

So if I am reading this correctly, you are referring to two players out of 200 (Cody and Bowman), and you think you could have made a better decision?

Those two were not even projected to be taken until the late-second/early-third round at THE VERY best. You have a VERY obvious need at QB and you have a QB sitting there in the 2nd that was considered "the most NFL ready" and by some considered a late first-round pick.

So to me that is easy to defend, even under these circumstances.

Clausen doesn't make a 2 comma income on our cap, either. He makes a little over 800,000 this year and 900,000 next year. For a backup QB that is peanuts so he will likely be around unless we can find something even cheaper.

On the flip side, you could have had Taylor Mays, and then converted him to LB, and watched him get hurt again and again but flash potential every now again like Thomas Davis.

That being said, when I look at this draft I feel Cody could have been a good pick. Other than that, the truth is that his year he got drafted was a poor class overall once you hit the second round. It isn't Clausen's fault where he got picked and he was a smart pick at the time. You can not predict people fizzling out.

Most of these people that "knew" Jimmy wouldn't pan out in the NFL are also the same people that "knew" the urinal cakes would not be as delicious as they had hoped, but they'll sure as poo make sure to let you know, "HEY! HEY! THAT PISS ROCK TASTED LIKE PISS!"

The Clausen pick was the correct pick for us at the time. Some people just want to get overly creative with their revisionist history.

Even if you don't believe it, you have to admit that without Jimmy, there would be no Cam. That being said, you should be grateful for Jimmy's critical role in Cam's arrival to Charlotte.
