Stewart is entering his fifth season, but he has just 13 career starts. He had 761 yards in 2011, but averaged 5.4 per rush in 16 games. He did catch 47 passes out of the backfield.

Combined with Williams, the Panthers do have a nice 1-2 punch.

Nice, if it were 1996.

Aren't the Panthers trying to move away from their reputation of being a run-first team, something former coach John Fox loved?

They could have Jim Brown and O.J. Simpson in their prime in their backfield, but if Newton weren't the star of the offense it wouldn't matter.

The Giants won a Super Bowl and were last in rushing.

The Cardinals went to the Super Bowl in 2008 and they were also last. It was the same for the 2009 Colts.

New England, which lost to the Giants in the Super Bowl last February, was ranked 24th in rushing.

See a pattern? Why pay runners when the running game is being de-emphasized?

Kind of unfair to completely ignore the 47 catches for 413 yards last season...His role doubles in the offense. And if this is about paying two running backs. D.Will doesn't have any guarantees after this season, and that deal can be restructured for flexibility. Money isn't an issue.

Offense is about having weapons, why does it matter what kind? Stewart functions as a runner and a pass catcher.

And also, I notice that he didn't included the New Orleans Saints** from 2009 because it doesn't fit his argument. They were 7th in rushing attempts the year they won the super bowl.

I don't see a problem in accumulating as many weapons as possible on offense as long as they can contribute consistently.

    • It’s like being on the Flyers broadcast team feed so far
    • Boy the flyers look good early. Lots of bad plays and slow start by our team. Hope that changes before the score changes.
    • I guess I should have stipulated outside the sacred cow.   I complained from year one that Bryce should compete for and win the starting job on his own merit but no he was just handed it. I have been right there with everyone that wants competition.  But I don’t really have a huge problem with it for this season the way it has gone because where are the viable people we don’t have to trade for? I actually am okay with tiny hands Pickett because he is so close to Bryce arm strength wise and to be honest, skill wise. Probably. And it is only a one year deal.  That also takes into account that the QB class is looking stacked next year and if Young fails miserably then we get either a reset or a real competition and there will be more guys that I would like looking at in the FA QB class next year as well.    I sort of accept where we are this year and look at it as another treading water year (at QB). I just want to get to next year with some clarity. More than anything. And they did empty out the room (behind him anyway). Again, who was really there for us?  And I know it would not be a true competition at this point anyway. They are giving him the year, like it or not.    Also I don’t give a poo about winning games IF he sucks and or goes down after sucking because draft position and that stacked QB class.  And I want out from under him So Bad.     So I guess it is several factors that lessen my anxiety over his backup this particular season.    I am not trying to convince anyone, but you asked. That’s how I look at it.
