Brandon LaFell: Panthers WRs as good as anyone’s in NFL

Brandon LaFell said this.

Brandon LaFell, who caught a lot of passes Wednesday while Steve Smith visited a doctor, was asked where the Panthers’ receivers rank in relation to the rest of the league.

“We’ve got guys that can compete with anybody,” LaFell said. “I don’t feel like there’s a secondary that really can stop us because we’ve got as many guys as anyone else has that can get open and make plays.”

But Smith, a five-time Pro Bowler entering his 12th season, is the unquestioned leader of the group.

Panthers coach Ron Rivera said Smith is being treated with antibiotics for an infection that developed after last week’s exhibition win against Miami. Trainers are waiting for the swelling to go down in Smith’s foot before deciding whether he will play Sunday against the Jets.

Receivers are only as good as the player throwing them the ball. With Cam under center, maybe we're worrying too much about the wide receivers. If Drew Brees can turn a bunch of average/young receivers into pro-bowl receivers, why can't Cam? Sure we aren't stacked with WRs that can make a shitty QB look average like the Falcons are, but I think Cam can make our WRs work for him. I like the confidence, but Lafell's gonna have to back up his words sooner rather than later. I hope he's ready.

Brandon has been great with big-play receptions. What I'd like to see is a 6-7 reception game for 80 yards plus, helping us keep a good rhythm on O, and the D off the field.

I think our WR's are improved, but we're not comparable to the Packers and probably a few other teams. Houston comes to mind, Baltimore.

Our WRs are decent outside of smith. problem is smith is the engine that makes all the other WRs look good without him that are even worse, but hey confidence is good.

It's important that he feels this way regardless of whether or not he's right.

Personally I do think we have a very solid WR group behind Smitty and top to bottom they might be as good as any group in the NFL.
