The Players Are Rallying Around Kalil

Panthers center Ryan Kalil bought a newspaper ad promising a Super Bowl run. His coach bought a box of T-shirts supporting Kalil's pledge in the Charlotte Observer.

Panthers' players have been wearing shirts with a Panthers' logo on the front and the message, “I have Ryan Kalil's back” on the back.

They were placed in players' lockers last week at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., where the Panthers practiced for four days before their Week 1 loss at Tampa Bay. Kalil said he appreciated Ron Rivera's gesture.

“Coach had them there. I believe it when he says that,” Kalil said Thursday. “We've just got to make sure we've got his back, and get done what we've got to get done.”

Before the Panthers began training camp in July, Kalil bought a full-page ad in the Observer that he called a rallying cry for the fans. He wrote about ending the season in New Orleans with a “sterling silver victory.”

Offensive lineman Garry Williams thought the ad – and shirts – were great.

“We all wear it with pride because that's what we believe. We all have his back. The statement he made in the paper shows true leadership. I've had his back since day one, and I still do,” Williams said.

“You see a lot of guys wearing it around here – not just a T-shirt to have one, but because they believe in what's on the back.”

Since the beginning of this new regime, our team tries so very hard at looking/talking like they're doing the right things. I'm not dissing them but they need to start playing like they talk. I've still got high hopes for some steady and strong improvement this season despite the dud of a first game.

I really hope we rip the Saints* a new one

The less the media keeps bringing up Kalil's dumb prediction the better. I know he was trying to generate excitement within the fan base, but enough already.

prediction wasn't dumb and the team doesn't need to be backing off of it after one loss.

if they don't believe they can do it they never will do it.

i swear this fanbase lacks balls. i'm just glad the team doesn't. enough with the short sighted goals.

    • Unless the league decides to rollback the rule book 30 years, that player at QB isn't winning any Super Bowls.  QB has to elevate those around him.  QBs that are carried by the team are always exposed in the playoffs. Closest thing to an average QB that has won the SB recently is Jalen Hurts.  But he's so unique with his legs and the unstoppable tush push that I don't think it's easy to compare him to anyone.  Certainly not someone who is subbed out for QB sneaks.
    • You absolutely can have hope. You can’t convert people though; making advocacy posts are kind of … not reading the room.   I had a small hope that he would be able to at least manage some games and that they could make it work in some kind of no fun to watch fashion.  But honestly I had 100% determined he was not NFL starter material, and I had conviction. So to root for him to marginally succeed goes against the best interest of the Panthers long term, according to my beliefs. I wanted him gone the minute he got here if I am honest. It was up to him to prove otherwise.  He has rarely shown me anything to think I was wrong on his ceiling.  He did show me some courage last year, standing in the pocket and stepping into his throw in the face of pressure - but that has gone somewhere. He made some nice throws last year in places too, but they invested in him on the level of the Atlanta game should be his norm. Good luck seeing that again on Sunday. Still, he did it once, so technically it could happen again.
    • Damn that was a longer post than I intended, Maybe I should have started a new thread.
