Rivera: More changes could be coming in Carolina

http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/Rivera-More-changes-could-be-coming-in-Carolina-30765716

Rivera said Carolina's final 10 games are ''an evaluation process'' and he hasn't ruled out firing assistant coaches or cutting players for underperforming.

''In a situation like this is, when action is being taken, it doesn't mean the action has stopped,'' Rivera said. ''By no means is it over.''

Rivera knows the evaluation process applies to him as well.

Rivera's seat got a little hotter Monday when Hurney, the man who hired him in 2011, was fired. New general managers tend to like to hire their own coaches and in some cases that person is one in the same.

The underachieving Panthers are 1-5 this season entering Sunday's game at Chicago and just 7-22 in two years under Rivera. The 50-year-old Rivera is in the second year of a four-year contract.

When asked about the running game, quarterback Cam Newton said ''I'm not the offensive coordinator. ...

''We haven't had it exciting like we want it to be but we still have to call the plays. It's kind of put a strangle on our passing game. We have to be more balanced.''

As for his own future with the Panthers, Rivera views every day as a fight to keep his job.

Doesn't sound like "alls well" within the team. When the owner says that his team lacks a clear leader..... Players start calling out coaches.... Head Coach telling coaches and players they could be cut any day.......In fact, if I read between the lines at what Cam said, I'd almost think that he's written off the year!

Yes it is, but I think it solidifies what BrooklyBully was sayin last week....

Man, I dont know what to think. The franchise as a whole seems to be in turmoil, and that is as far from what I was thinking this season would be as it can. Hopefully, this week lights a fire up under everybody's asses- get your poo together or get your resume out...

its the resume part that has some worried - how much you wanna bet chud wont bring his read option crap this week?

The read option is a good play and should not be removed from our offense, but come on. Seems like every time we ran the ball it was the read option. It is a slow developing play. Teams are clogging it up and it is easy to stop. There is a reason why this type of running game is not a typical running style in the NFL.

Put us in the "I" and run it. Play action off it. Throw the read option in there just to keep them honest.

We have the talent.

The offense can't always make chicken salad out of chicken poo. The read option seems to be a successful curveball 5-8 times a game, not the foundation of any offensive strategy. I just see Chud like I saw Fox at the end of his tenure, so resolute and stubborn/egotistical to not to want to concede what he's gameplanning isn't working. The players see it, the fans see it. And their demeanor on the field after/between plays these last few weeks is all I need to see to know they don't buy in to this philosophy right now. I can't be the only one who saw DeAngelo literally sprint off the field without acknowledging anyone right after the clock hit 00:00.

It was about this time last year if I remember right, that once it became apparent that the season would not result in playoffs, and was for the most part over, Rivera mentioned how the remaining games would be "evaluations" for who wants to be here next year.

We still have basically the same team from last year with a few changes, and guys should really be worried that they're really going to be evaluated this year?

    • overall agree on the draft grade as a whole on on each pick, but every time I read (and I have read it more than once) that we "gave up two firsts" for Bryce, I am confused. We gave up the 2024 first, but we swapped 2023 firsts, so we didn't give up anything there. We did give up our former first rounder in DJ, but I don't think thats what you mean as one of the "firsts" we gave up.
    • Didn't  see this posted (since 2023) but since folks have been posting that you can't judge a draft class for three years (a ridiculous take), I thought I'd post this to see what people thought about the 2023 draft. Unfortunately this may not be the most interesting class to do this with but I do quite like retrospective draft grades. Would appreciate other's takes on this (and other recent) draft classes.   1(1) - Bryce Young QB: I am a bigger Bryce Young apologist than most (maybe all). I like the kid. But there is no way around it: This was a terrible pick. If he had been picked in the 4th or even the 3rd round I would feel pretty good about it. But this was the first overall pick that we gave up two firsts, our best offensive player to get.  GRADE: C -    2(39) - Jonathan Mingo WR: not much to say here here. He was here for two years. His yards per catch are on par with Bryce's yards per pass. Rough stuff. To date he has still never scored a touchdown in the NFL GRADE: F   3(80) - DJ Johnson OLB: a pick I hated as soon as it happened and an example of why the premise of this thread is honestly dumb. This was a bad pick when it happened. Most people knew it.  Then came training camp and he did not look good. Then came the preseason which confirmed what we saw in TC. Then came the season which confirmed what we saw in preseason. To date, he has half a sack in his career. GRADE: F 4 (114) Chandlers Zavala G: Honestly the best pick of this draft which really speaks to how awful this draft is. Other than Bryce, the only pick still on the team. He is mostly average or below average depth which in round 4 is not terrible. But he had a pff score of 43.5 and though I think people have unrealistic expectations for draft picks, I still would want a little more from a fourth round pick GRADE: C+   5 (145) - Jammie Robinson S: I liked the pick when it happened but ended up being a disappointment. He logged 1 tackle with the falcons last year and not enough snaps to get a grade on PFF.  GRADE: F OVERALL DRAFT GRADE: F
