Ron Rivera's first press conference - a summary

BIGH2001

He went on to say his football philosophy is to be aggressive on both sides of the ball, as well as running a balanced offense. He said not just balanced from a run/pass perspective, but rather knowing when to run the ball, knowing when to pass the ball and attacking your opponent's weaknesses.

this is where i feel we were lied to.

i think they were pretty aggressive last year, but this year he just crapped all over that aggressive thing. he's essentially picked up where fox left off as far as aggressiveness and playing not to lose.

it's what i really expect from defensive minded coaches who tend to prefer more ball control games and not really being aggressive. i thought that rivera was a break from that mindset, but i was wrong. the organization was wrong.

we really need to go a very different direction this time around and we need to get someone with a track record of being aggressive and running an aggressive game.

Christ, I remember the hire. I was so excited about this team and last year further enforced that, except I didn't see a whole lot of the discipline I expected. Regardless, this team was aggressive and exciting last year offensively. They really poo the bed this year.

This Rivera experiment has been a big failure in my eyes.

I disagree. I don't see a bit of ball control in this offense. They live and die by the longer pass plays.

i guess my mind was on the crucial moments of the game towards the end. the team just gets soft on both sides of the ball.

agreed that they focus too much on the long ball/big downfield play for most of the game.

I felt that they also lied about being focused on teaching and utilizing the talent that they have on the roster. A season later we're hearing that they don't have the personnel for their scheme?

    • in starts, he has played better, been more efficient and outproduced Bryce by virtually every statistical metric that exists in 2025.  And has the 2 head to heads over Carolina.  I mean, your jaw should hit the floor.  But not for the reason you are implying.  That freaking stings.  Denying these realities isn't going to help the Panthers build a better team going forward.
    • He is basically having a polar opposite rookie season than Bryce. 4-3 as a starter on a very bad team.  68% for 237 passing yards and 19 rush per game. 9 TDs,  6 TOs in his starts.  and folks acknowledge the surprisingly play because no one thought poo of the random 2nd rounder and he is player better as a rookie thus far than so many prized picks did as a rookies (not just Bryce but a boatload of dudes).   It's only a sour issue to give someone props because he is a Saint and of course the Bryce thing.  It's like giving the TE in Clev props for having near identical production as the chosen one Tyler Warren.  Fannin is having a great rookie season in a very bad spot.
    • This is a very weird take. The reason Shough doesn't deserve it is because he's only started 7 games. He's doing crazy well for a rookie and out playing plenty of vets with a worse roster. He's waaay above league average in a number of categories during his starts and he passes the eye test in game by making plays. Meanwhile Bryce Young had one of the worst rookie seasons of all time. Still TMac deserves it more. It's only been 7 games for Shough so he doesn't deserve any awards. Even if he gets to 9 he doesn't.
