PFT: Glut of new decision makers adds mystery

Usually by this time in the pre-draft process, we’ve known the identity of the first pick in the NFL Draft.

And sometimes the second. And third. But this year, guesses are all over the map as to what’s about to happen in five hours or so.

Part of the reason for the uncertainty is the lack of track record for the guys making the choices themselves.

The current owners of nine of the first 14 picks are teams with new coaches, general managers, or both.

That makes it harder to forecast, because in many cases, the guys making the pick have never done it before to establish a pattern.

This may indeed be one of the more unpredictable drafts in recent years.

We can guess based on what we've heard, but "draft season" is also "bluff season".

When you get right down to it, we have no idea what Gettleman is going to do.

Agree, that's part of the reason it's so hard to get a read on the Panthers without Hurney here. We knew how he thought and valued positions.

Gettlemen is green, this is his first draft and while people point to his role in NY they often overlook that he was over the Pro personnel, not college.

So, I'm going into tonight with an open mind and hoping we make the right move and that we can have a 3rd consecutime ROY.

Yeah, I agree with everything you said with the exception of the green part. Gettleman was due for this role with his scouting background and pro personel experience. In my opinion Hurney was green and had no business getting the nod as a GM. Sportswriter to GM?? Talk about knowing people in high places to get ahead.

    • The good thing about replacing a bad player is you really have nothing to lose. If their replacement is bad so what, you didn't get much worse and probably saved money.
    • I came over from the old Panthers Insider site. When Fox Sports bought that platform it slowly just started dying plus the guy who ran that site was dealing with some pretty significant health issues so the whole thing just slowly fell apart. Quite a few of us migrated over here. Not sure how many are still around.  I miss that place. It struck a nice balance of having enough active posters to keep productive conversation flowing but didn't have so much traffic that you end up with a lot of trolling BS. This place is getting there though since we shutdown new registrations but at some point we're going to have to open it back up or we'll watch this place slowly die off too as posters fall off for one reason or another. We just have to figure out a way to filter out the spam bots. It was a never ending battle to ban the spam bots to keep then from overrunning the site. You'd think they'd be a little more strategic. I mean, if you fill a site with nothing but spam people are just going to stop coming so it's not a sustainable model. But nope, every one of them makes dozens of duplicate threads filling up pages upon pages as soon as their account goes live.
    • lol...I don't remember that.  Although recalling what I had for breakfast yesterday is sometimes a challenge.  Hope it was a positive thing.
