Am I the only one that wants us to be a conservative ground and pound offense?

Rivera has said he believes in balance on offense, but his take on what that word means isn't necessarily the same as what most people think when they hear that term.

For Rivera, "balance" means the offense has the ability to attack whatever weakness the other team's defense shows. They can't tackle? We run. They can't cover? We pass. They can do both? We throw out a different wrinkle. Whatever works, that's what they wanna do.

And honestly, "whatever works" is a good summary of my offensive philosophy. I'm a complete pragmatist in this area. If we can score points by running draw plays very down, heck, go for it. I don't give a rip if it's boring as long as it wins. I'll take boring wins over exciting losses any day of the week.

Don't get me wrong, it is a bit insane to keep running into a brick wall over and over when your passing game is working or vice versa. My point about balance is to never allow yourself to become one dimensional. If you do, you just made the opposing D-coordinators job exponentially easier. Just make sure that even if we have passed for 500yds in a half you at least run a draw play or something to keep the defense honest.

What I hate is 3 passes from inside the five or a designed Cam run/slip and fall 2 yd loss. Pound the rock with the billion dollar backfield please.

The knocks I am hearing about Shula is "he has a very conservative track record" Thats not a bad thing at all. People say we won games down the stretch last season because Cam didnt throw as many picks. While that is true, another main reason why we won those games is three simple words. Time Of Possession. Show me a team that dominates game after game in time of possession and I will show you a playoff contender.

I for one am hopimg we go to a ground a d pound, conservative, draw play on 3rd and 20 type offense (ok joking about that last one) but you get my point. Not only that but we definately have a good enough defense to go back to a focused run game and dominate time of possession.

In the NFL there are certain aspects that fans have a hard on for. Some love sacks, some love tackles for a loss, some love blocked punts. Me? Nothing in the NFL makes me happier than (besides winning ofcourse) than a offense that is constantly on the field and the camera zooms in on opposing QBs biting their finger nails and pacing on the sidelines. I love teams that dominate time of possession.

Thats what I never liked about Chud, he didnt value that. Why on earth do you want to score so fast only to give the ball right back to Matt Ryan and Drew Brees, I love that pigskin. I love it so much I want our offense to never give it back to the opposing teams. Keep that rock! Keep it for eternity.

 

Contrary to this train of thought: If the Panthers defense would have allowed the opposition (especially the first half of the year), to score quickly, instead of having the opposition score after long TOP, the Panthers offense would have scored more points in 2012. 

 

Don't be fooled. The NFL is an offensive game right now. You just need an adequate defense, with a superior offense (unless you're very lucky and/or fortunate to have two very good ones for a bit) in order to win. 

 

And the analytics prove/demonstrate, that if the Panther offense would have received the ball more, the Panther would have scored more points, and subsequently won more games. 

 

The Panther defense, actually prevented the Panther offense (unlike the previous year), from scoring points in 2012. Rivera, had something to do with this as well, as he was very passive during 2nd halves (when the Panthers had leads), and at the end of halves afraid to close out. Rivera was/is just afraid to score, and believed in a defense too much, who always seemed to disappoint at the end (no matter how well they seemed to be playing during the first half of the season). 

 

I wanna see the Panther offense score a lot of points in 2013.  The defense just needs to hold in the 4th Quarter when they have leads. That was the big Bugaboo last year, that even teams with shaky defenses (like Indiana) was able to accomplish last year. 

 

FYI: In  2011, the Panthers passed and ran for a lot of yards. The two are not mutually exclusive.

I get that. Even when something's working, you don't wanna make the old mistake of going to the well too many times.

That said, most OCs will continue to exploit any weakness they can find unless the defense gives them reason not to.

What this team needs is to execute, plain and simple. Not go conservative ground and pound or the opposite and go air raid.

How many times last year did we not execute when it mattered on 3rd downs that would have kept the clock moving and gotten a 1st down. He'll even better execution on 1st and 2nd downs

You execute, you'll move the chains and keep the clock and score points an give your D time to rest

the league isn't purely about passing. anybody that says that, isn't paying attention.

ya have to be able to pass and run, oor your offense becomes easier to defend....even the elite passing attacks.

This past year in a completely new system, in which we have a vertical offense and the read option,"Holy poo, am I the only one around here that wants a traditional offense of pound it on the ground?"
