Veteran cornerbacks that might be cut in training camp?

Given the right opportunity I think the Panthers could sign a veteran cornerback that is cut during training camp, ala Dwan Edwards last year.  Much like defensive tackle last year, the Panthers brass didn't address the position in the draft and brought in bargain free agents to fill the void.

This is all speculation but here's a list of teams that have a logjam at cornerback.

The Arizona Cardinals made cornerback a priority in the offseason and could end up cutting one or more cornerbacks.  With Patrick Peterson a rising star, behind him is Javier Arenas, Antonie Cason, Jerraud Powers, among others.  This article raises the possibility that second year corner Jamell Fleming, a third round pick in 2012, could be cut.  Would he even be worth bringing in if he was cut?  http://www.revengeofthebirds.com/2013/5/3/4296146/arizona-cardinals-offseason-acquisitions-of-cornerbacks-raise

The 49ers have four starting caliber corners.  Carlos Rogers, Tarell Brown, Chris Culliver and Nnamdi Asomugha. The 49ers are loaded all over the roster and could use the space to carry an extra WR with Crabtree out.  http://49ers.pressdemocrat.com/2013/05/inside-the-49ers/a-statistical-comparison-of-the-49ers-top-cornerbacks/

Denver has a surplus at corner with Champ Bailey, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, and Chris Harris Jr, but after them is a slew of young unproven guys.  Anyone they cut might be a player much like the Panthers already have.  http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1649079-breaking-down-the-denver-broncos-cornerback-competition

The Bengals have Dre Kirkpatrick, Leon Hall, Terrence Newman, and Pacman Jones at corner.  It's safe to say the Panthers would never sign Pacman, but could Newman be cut?  http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1636618-cincinnati-bengals-will-dre-kirkpatrick-start-at-cornerback-in-2013

Not sure any of the guys who could be on the chopping block represent an immediate upgrade, but there are surprise cuts every year.  I think the Panthers would pounce on the right opportunity.

I hope Florence surprises, but I honestly didn't and don't understand that signing.  Obviously the coaches saw something in him that others didn't.  And it's not like he's a young guy who can improve and become part of our core.  In terms of veteran stop gaps, I definitely thought we could've done better.

But, again, it's not always trying to find a "better" player, sometimes it's about finding the right player that fits what you're trying to do.  Hopefully we have that guy in Florence.  I'd still feel a lot better about our secondary if we brought in one more potential starting caliber vet at either CB or S.

Vet O-linemen is highly likely IMO.

I hope so.  Bell is serviceable at best and we know Hangartner sucks at RG and I don't want to depend on a raw D2 4th round rookie there either.  We definitely need to add another solid vet on the OL.

One more solid vet OL and one more solid vet DB and I think we're about as good as we're gonna get this year.

I could see a RG being picked up. Maybe even a RT if the right guy were to hit the market. I just don't think any DB will be brought in. I really think Gettlemen is serious about liking our DBs.

Same with WR. I know plenty of folks want a new shiney WR. I just don't think we could get that lucky for a quality starting WR would fall into our laps.

Oh, oh, or maybe a TE if one were to be cut. I could live with that.

I agree but I guess they added him for depth

If what I read about Shula going to the ground and pound we need a rg.

    • Yeah this needs to happen ASAP. I don’t care if the price is lower. These Vikings fans on Twitter are absolutely insufferable. Acting like they have been world beaters for the last 60 years and thinking Carolina should just hand him over for nothing. We’ve had 7 or so tough seasons in a row and we have still been to two superbowls since they have and won more playoff games since 1995.    I hope Dan sends him to Detroit for a 2040 7th rounder and eats half the contract. Even Sheena is replying to them.
    • I hope your cath went well
    • So did the Panthers initiate this by making him "available for the right price" or was this something Thielen himself pushed for? I also never saw this quote he made about JJ McCarthy back in June. https://sports.yahoo.com/article/panthers-adam-thielen-both-asked-182711572.html Thielen believes McCarthy is built for big moments and will eventually show the world the skillset that won the Michigan Wolverines a national championship in 2023/2024. He even said McCarthy could be the “face of the league.” “I have high expectations for him. I've been able to be around a little bit through some of the time last summer... back in Minnesota, and I think he has the ability to be one of the great quarterbacks this season and the face of this league at some point. You know, I think he's got every tool and intangible that you can have,” Thielen said. “Obviously, it's a difficult league and it's not gonna just be easy, but I think he has the ability to handle adversity to be able to be big in big moments, as you saw when he was in college. I think he's got a great support staff around him, whether it be the coaches or the trainers.” Sounds like he's had one foot out the door for some time now.
