CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Carolina Panthers defensive end Greg Hardy has a lofty goal for the number of sacks he's aiming for this season and he wasn't really laughing when he said it.

"Fifty,'' Hardy said Tuesday during a break between minicamp practices.

"Why shoot low, right? If I'm going to shoot at it, I'm going to shoot at it with a 50 caliber. I'm going to shoot at a little bird with a 50-caliber bullet. That's the goal for this year, 50 sacks, that's where I'm at. That's the goal, 50. You heard it first."

The 24-year-old Hardy has 18 career sacks in his three seasons.

Hardy is one of the more vocal and flamboyant members of the Panthers and he held court with the media for about 10 minutes. His spiel was loaded with confidence.

Hardy, who had 11 sacks last season, said he and fellow defensive end Charles Johnson, who had 12.5 sacks, don't have a competition among themselves when it comes to the number of sacks.

"Our D-line is about getting money and not like you all are thinking. Just everybody winning. If the tackles are getting it, that means they've got to block them now and while they're blocking them, I'm sneaking in the backdoor and taking everything.

"It's the type of situation where we want everybody to win -- the young guys, the new guys, the old guys. It was the same way last year. That's how we got to RG III (Robert Griffin III), that's how we got to Chicago, all those guys. Just breeding confidence into all of the defensive linemen and letting them know they can win.''

Speaking of money, Hardy did address his contract situation. He is headed into the final year of his contract and is making slightly more than $1 million. When he missed some OTAs (organized team activities) there was speculation that he might be making a statement about wanting a new contract. But He showed up for the mandatory minicamp and said he has no plans of holding out for training camp.

"Yeah, I will be there bright and early, same as always,'' Hardy said.

Yep looks like he's gonna hold out.

Hardy has quickly became the soul and attitude of our Dline...and I'm for one happy about that. If all our Dline can play into his drive and mean streak, we'll be one of, if not the best lines in the game.

I hope Hardy breaks the single season record!!!

    • This while he didn't single handily LOSE the game on any one play.....    He was a first overall pick, one we paid a fortune for..... the bar for him is a 10 foot dunk not a 5"8 children's rim.   32 for 49 for 287 with 1 td and 1 int in two games vs the worst team in the conference, two critically important games that we would be 9-5 and competing for the #2 if he had led us to victory....   Ive given him props for the TD to tet.... it was the best pass ive ever seen him make.....   But putting up these kind of numbers isn't up to par. Defenses stack the box and dare him to throw....  and he still puts up medicore at best numbers.    To win with Bryce young the entire rest of the team has to be absolutely perfect to make up for his deficiencies.... so while he didn't "lose" this game for us..... HE DEFFINATLY DIDNT GO WIN IT FOR US. (Which is the REALISTIC EXPECTATION)
    • His O is just built on taking repeated shots and that’s not BY’s game.  It was always a round peg and square hole…. But I also agree with your post.  I hate OC HCs.  Especially green ones.   I never liked anything about the setup
    • I get that. He's also trying to do HC and OC this year which I think is just too much for him. I think it's hard to call plays from the sidelines. That view from up top helps them see what a defense is doing better. A few HCs can do it because they have the QBs and experience to pull it off. DC has neither. I think DC may have spread himself too thin and Bryce isn't the QB to be able to pull of his end of it either. How much they compliment each other in creating this offensive bleh, yet to be determined. Doesn't really matter because it's still awful.
