Ron Rivera - "A lot of guys are winning with 2's and 3's" at cornerback

"Look at the technique," Rivera said. "Why do they have them in these 45-degree stances? Why are they shuffling out? What happened to the true backpedal where you plant and break? Why are they always playing this coverage?

"You put tape on and you could pretty much guarantee this team is always playing this coverage. In our league, some teams don't play as much man. Some teams play more zone. If you grab a corner that has all the skill set but that's not what he's used to doing, now you have to redevelop him and reteach him and he's got to relearn. There's a lot of things that go into play about why it's taking time, or they're just not finding those guys yet."

Ron Rivera heavily quoted in an ESPN article about how elite cornerbacks are becoming increasingly rare.  Say anything about why Carolina bypassed drafting any secondary help?

Which means, Rivera said, that teams often must draft corners based on projections and potential, which he called "dirty words in the league."

"If you're going to project him or he has potential, then how high do you draft him?" Rivera said. "Now, you take a guy a little bit higher than you should and all of a sudden you have to make it happen. If he doesn't get it or doesn't fit, it's tough."

It's tough because mistakes, particularly on high draft picks, can get coaches fired.

This article is pretty on point . Its also a reason I'm not totally afraid of our CBs. I think both Joshes can be good corners. They just need to learn how. And Wilks is one of the best secondary coaches out there.

not sure Charles Godfrey will be on the team after this season....we're over the cap in 2014

and he'll be making over 7 million dollars.

we're de-emphasizing the dbs, owe big money to Hardy and Cam, and adding hog mollies to

put more pressure on the QB.

I hope he'll restructure.

    • A winning record would be nice, but I still have us winning around the 6 to 8 game mark. Realistically we should beat the Jets and Saints, that gets us to 5 wins. After that, we have to face a lot of potential play off teams and our divisional opponents. I think we’ll win 1 or 2 of those games to take us to 6 or 7 wins, perhaps 8 wins if we can spring a further surprise.  Is that enough progress for head coach and QB? I’m not sure, it will depend on performances and output. That said, it’s nice to be back in a position where we are thinking about the play offs.
    • I would tend to agree about not falling into the trap and paying a below average QB, but sometimes situations can “force” a team to pay that QB. For example, if we play ourselves into a 9-8 like record, then what options will we have in the draft? Or do we avoid the draft and trade for or sign someone in free agency?  I’m not convinced by the 2026 QB draft class. There’s some intriguing prospects but no one that really screams “draft me”. I’m not sure we’ve got anyone really that stands out as a trade candidate or free agent signing. So although we might not want to commit a big money contract to Young, him playing well and showing progress might force the team’s hand.
    • Realistically we would be looking at no more than a mid round pick for Dowdle or Chuba. Are we really that desperate for a mid round pick? Not really. I would much prefer us utilise the two RBs in a 1-2 punch similar to how we used D-Will and Stewart. After all, Bryce is not Drew Brees. He won’t throw for 300+ yards and carry the team consistently as a passer. So having a strong running game with a 1-2 punch will be beneficial to him, and it will also be beneficial to the RBs because we can spell them and not overwork them.
