Thank You Hurney

No it isn't.  It was the obvious pick to make.  There was never any true competition between Newton and Gabbert - simply the media trying to make some news.  We looked at him, but only to look at all options.  Miller nor Green were never truly in the conversation either.  Dareus was about the only other guy I thought we might take.

However, it was obvious about a month before the draft that Cam Newton was going to be the guy we were going to take.  We needed a quarterback and Newton was, despite the criticisms, easily the best prospect at that position in the draft (if you want more fact, many called that a weak draft as far as QBs go at the time due to Newton, Locker, Gabbert being up top).

You're absolutely wrong there. There was talk for weeks that we would take either Newton, Gabbert, Dareus, Miller, or Green. In fact, I think there was a time where media outlets were dead set that we were going to take Von Miller. No one here or anywhere else had any idea who we were going to take with the 1st pick until about a week-ish maybe less than a week beforehand.

I did not see Everette Brown listed in this discussion, and what the Panthers gave up (1st rounder) to get an undersized DE.  It seems like Hurney did pretty well in the early years, but than got into the mode of 'trading up' to get players (Otah, Brown, Edwards to name a few).  Not only did these players not make-it, but they also were expensive for what the Panthers gave up.  If Edwards does finally do something this year, it was not worth the cost (or the wait).  Hurney should have been fired long before Fox was.

Yeah, talks among fans and media outlets who are wrong every year.

There was no chance in hell we were ever going to take Miller, Green, and especially not Gabbert (who wasn't even the 2nd QB taken - he was SUCH an overrated prospect).

Was anything official until a week or so before the draft?  Nope.  But it was clear Newton was the guy.  Maybe it is just me though who saw that and maybe I'm wrong.  But I never bought into us drafting anyone but Cam or possibly Dareus.

Like I said though, maybe I am just seeing it how I saw it myself.  But taking anyone other than Newton there would have been illogical at the time (taking any WR #1 overall is dumb in my opinion unless you are somehow set everywhere else, which isn't the case for teams picking first).

Maybe you saw it yourself, but that's not how everyone else saw it.  You should go page through some of the threads around http://www.carolinahuddle.com/boards/forum/7-carolina-panthers/page-593?prune_day=100&sort_by=Z-A&sort_key=last_post&topicfilter=all

In the weeks leading up to the announcement that we would take Cam, there was serious talk about Green and Peterson.  Cam had shown a ton of talent, but he had a ton of red flags -- Only a year in a major college system, spread offense QB, character questions, Heisman trophy winner (a red flag to some), not a great wonderlic score, etc...  Through it all the Panthers did a ton of research, and there was still a little surprise when they made it clear that Newton was the guy.

So yeah, you may have called it.  I'm sure you called Keuchly too, and probably predicted Star would be there at 14 this year.  But most people didn't call it so easily, or with so much certainty.  And a lot of people acknowledged that it wasn't a slam-dunk pick either.  It just turned out to be one, in retrospect.

In 2011, I thought the quarterback draft class was lousy, Newton included.  Repeatedly said we should wait till the next draft to take a QB.

In 2012, I thought the best choice was to take a defensive tackle and was disappointed when we took Kuechly.

Clearly, there are reasons why I'm not working as a general manager in the NFL

In my defense, I was right in my evaluations of Jimmy Clausen (bad pick) Everette Brown (dropped for a reason) and DeAngelo Williams (solid choice) among others.  Also loved the pick of Star Lotulelei this year.

Thank you for the three highly paid running backs that could be replaced by a 6th round rookie.

Hopefully you're being facetious...

Double trouble was a great draft decision. There wasn't a better 1-2 punch in the league for awhile there. Giving them new contracts was a great idea as well, I just wish they were for about 50% less....

Also, barner cannot and will never replace Tolbert. Great, great signing.

Also, isn't it a little soon to Annoint a rookie running back as someone who can replace double trouble? He looks promising, but had played literally one preseason game so far. I want him to succeed, but I won't count my chickens before they hatch.

Good at making draft picks or not. Those huge contracts would have screwed us over for many years to come! Thank God Gettleman Knows how to do business!

It is practically impossible to screw up a pick in the top 15. Go back and look at the last 10 or so drafts and list how many busts there are in the top half of the draft Almost none. And usually half of the top 15 are pro bowlers.

My dog could be a first round draft specialist.

I don't know....there are a lot of busts in drafts at the top while Hurney was around
