I'm still not quite getting all the hype about Kaepernick

OK, granted I'm from the bay area, so maybe all the hype and buzz about Colin is a little more prevalent in the golden state, but I'm completely dumbfounded by some of the comparisons I've been hearing.

Radio talk show hosts are already putting him in the category of Steve Young and Joe Montana. TV sport shows (not just locally, but nationally as well) are prematurely saying he's a top 3 QB in this league right now, and will eventually go down as one of the greatest QB's to ever play this game, Yes, ever ....

If my memory serves me right, the dude played half a season, put up decent numbers, and led his team to a Superbowl appearance. Ok, not bad at all, but I didn't know starting 10 games in your career and losing a Superbowl is the new litmus test for determining greatness over an entire NFL career.

I'm not saying he isn't good. I do believe he has the upside and potential to be an upper echelon QB in this league, but I'm just not quite getting all these inane comparisons. What were people saying in Charlotte after Cam's rookie year? What about Jake Delhomme after he took over Rodney Peete and led us to a Superbowl? Were the comparisons similar?

He's had one really good game (vs. the patriots) and a bunch of fumbles.

I don't get the hype either. That team previously went 13-3 with Alex Smith, then spent the offseason wooing Peyton Manning. I'm thinking they could win with Jimmeh under center.

He is young, incredibly accurate, and can break plays wide open with his feet. He has great presence in the pocket, and an absolute cannon for an arm.

Comparing him to hall of famers is silly, too small a sample size. Seeing him as the best young QB in the game is not.

    • To me, this seems like they feel they aren't going to be competitive. I can't help but go back to Bryce. Good guy, but he doesn't inspire people to give it their all. He isn't a "leader" that people look to. There is no Smith, Delhomme, Kuechly, Cam, etc. coming in that door.  It has to be Bryce, but biologically speaking, how often is the shortest man in the room going to command the kind of respect that will drive people? It just isn't. That isn't how we are wired. That isn't how any living animal on Earth today is wired.  I just follow the science guys.
    • Vick's issue with Reid was that he couldn't take a hit, and he wouldn't go down. Otherwise he was pretty good much of the time.  Mahomes has a system that works. Mahomes doesn't become Mahomes elsewhere because not everyone can extract 125% of the ability of a specific player like Reid can. Kevin O'Connell is beginning to look like he has that ability as well but I'll need to see how he does with his Redshirt Freshman.  I also wonder how much of their playoff issue last year was related to the offense as a whole and not just Darnold. Fans don't really dive into the "why" things happen, they just see the what and complain about it.
