Fearless Predictions - Seahawks Edition

It's time to unwrap the new Shula offense:

1. It's been noted that the play calling system has been simplified. According to Kalil on Sirius, we will not run a lot of no huddle/hurry up offense, but we will break the huddle quickly so Cam has more time to look over the field, see the defense and even change the play.

2. If Seattle brings 8 in the box, look for Smitty to be used more in the slot with Ginn/LaFell split wide.

3. Watch for Olsen to run the same seam pattern that DA hit Williams on in preseason when we get in Seattle territory.

4. Tolbert makes a "miraculus" recovery and is used heavily on Sunday, especially in the red zone.

5. You won't see much read option unless the power running game goes nowhere.

Cam has to improve his accuracy against a Seattle secondary who will be playing press man to man all day. I don't believe we won a game last year when he threw more that 1 interception. So Cam needs to take what's there or throw it away. I look for a conservative game plan for both sides with the Panthers winning on a late FG 20-17.

Smitty to Sherman:  "At least I don't have a Revis poster above my bed."

"In a second, you will back on the sideline watching us kick off."

"Thanks,  A mouth always makes my highlight reel more fun to watch."

and I will loan him the smack I used in high school:

"Your mama paid to watch me play tonight."

I predict that Smitty says all of these things.

Cam is excited about being named captain a few days earlier and proves his worth, leading the Panthers to a 27-13 Victory!

However, the score doesnt tell the complete truth. Panthers D had a score and they gave the ball back to the offense with good position, usually at least their own 40. D made it easy for Cam and co., but Cam did great with 0 turnovers.

3 sacks and a whole lot of hurries sound about right.

Nostradamus, Rasputin, Miss Cleo... The greatest seers throughout history....

Until now.

I have looked ahead to Sunday's matchup between the Panthers and the Seahawks. In my pumpkin beer induced stuper, the following visions came to me.

Spoiler Alert.

1. Mike Shula impresses. I have had many doubts about Shula, having lived in Tampa during his stint with the Bucs as their OC. Shula eases my fears on Sunday by calling a legitimate NFL game. He gets the Panthers back to a running team and even uses an i-formation from time to time (shocking!). Handoffs to Deangelo Williams out of the shotgun for a loss of two yards are a thing of the past.

2. Russell Wilson is sacked 3 times and hurried most of the game. The Panthers defensive front four, among the best in the entire NFL, wreaks havoc in their coming out party. The national media immediately starts the 'sophomore slump' story line while giving zero credit to the Panthers.

3. A surprise hero of the game emerges. Armanti Edwards catches a 4th quarter touchdown pass from Cam Newton to seal the game. Covered by Seahawks nickle Walter Thurmond, Edwards makes a great grab and the crowd goes completely mental. Armanti has had a great camp and preseason, but after his latest injury is ready to prove himself worthy.

This Sunday the Carolina Panthers put together the most complete game they have had in years. Offense, Defense, and Special Teams all provide a good performance. Bank of America is energized carrying the momentum to the next home game.

Panthers win 24-17.

2 ways I think it goes...

-The collective huddle mind has built this D into a juggarnaut.  They aren't.  Not week 1.  They make some plays.  They also get beat.

-Game of two halves.  First half Cam plays under C, doesn't run, and Williams runs over and over getting little to nothing (comparable D's have been a poor matchup for him for some time and our OL makes it more glaring as we saw last year).  2nd half we are down by a score, Shula switches things up, more Tolbert and more plays taking advantage of Newton's athletic ability....and one WR not named Smith makes 2 HUGE plays.

-Carolina wins with a long Gano FG.  The trifecta.  Comeback clutch win , win a close one, and our kicking game returns

OR

Greg Hardy gets all 50 sacks week 1.  He scores TDs on 32 of them.  Final score is 266 to 2.

    • I am optimistic that we might be on the verge of fielding a sustainable offense finally. The Bryce stats listed above are definitely encouraging. I don’t want to overly inflate this and disregard the previous 1 and a half seasons of production from Bryce and “cherry pick” stats but do hope the benching turns into an inflection point in his trajectory.      Lots of excitement heading into this season.
    • Summary The 2024 Carolina defense posted a 44.9 grade last year, which was the worst in the NFL since 2020. They also had the worst receiving grade in the NFL despite a QB that emerged in the second half of last year. TMac is most likely WR1 in this class and is now WR1 in Carolina He's going to be incredibly helpful on go balls, dig routes, and in the redzone. Highlights show just that: First highlight is Arizona vs. Utah. 4 verts vs. cover-0, TMac lined up alone on a go ball vs. press = we're launching it Second highlight shows his potential as the X. Runs a backside in-cut and the Tampa-2 MLB sells out on the corner route, leaving his back to TMac. Tough over the middle, explosive after the play. Sees TMac doing a lot of what Mike Evans was asked to do in Tampa. Third highlight shows how effective TMac is in the redzone and it's his one-handed catch vs. Travis Hunter. Brings "indefensible plays." Has size advantage that can beat guys, can jump, and has ridiculous hands. Will help Bryce in year 3 as it will allow him to continue playing "fearless" like he did after coming back from benching. Highlights show where TMac fits and re-emphasizes how he's going to make things easier on go balls, dig routes, and in the redzone: Fourth highlight shows Bryce vs. ATL when he hit AT vs. AJ Terrell down the sideline. Bryce has to hold the single deep safety during his drop to give Thielen a chance (who is only 4yds off of the LOS when Bryce is throwing it). Registers the big-time throw attacking vertically. Fifth highlight is vs. KC on a blitz where Bolton is coming downhill while Karlaftis is dropping back over the middle. Has an in-route that has outside leverage with Chris Jones applying immediate pressure. Layered it over Karlaftis' head for the completion. Sixth highlight is the fade route TD to David Moore vs. Zona. in the redzone. David Moore was the X on this play. Thought this was interesting, especially considering recent conversations about Bryce's intermediate game needing to be better:
    • Nah its Rod Brindamour 0-11 in the Eastern Conference Finals under him.....   Three trips in seven years Zero WINS in the third round.
