Competency Trumps Continuity

The system might have worked this weekend had smith & lafelle converted on two huge plays in the 1st half. When lafelle dropped the 4th and 1 pass it seemed all the momentum shifted to the cardinals and never swung back. Possibly because the playcalling became an act of desperation? It seemed Olsen was our best option, but was never to be seen again in the 2nd half. I feel like we abandoned whatever gameplan we had. Unless that plan was td or bust?

I am not all for firing people and things of that nature but Gettleman should have had his choice of the coaching staff. I am hoping Shula gets it together but so far it is not looking good. It is not just coaching though. When we finally call the right plays, our players seem to forget how to play football. We are 1-3 with plenty of football left. I just hope we can turn it around and make a run. One question, I was hearing a lot that the Panthers were only willing to sign an OC to a one year contract. Where is everyone getting that from?

Fox got handicapped as well late with OCs. Our HCs don't get to hire anyone they want....they settle on poo.

Fox and Rivera both were made to look worse than they are by our front office.

I am done coach bashing until our FO steps up. They deserve the blame. They are the worst part of the equation

I definitely understand what you are saying. Our FO is the reasoning why we were strapped for cash. If only we had an OC that would utilize this talent we would have a winning record. I strongly believe that. The defense has put us in good positions all year. We just can't score.

our players have done Shula no favors.

I think they overall have been a bigger disappointment than Shula. Dropped balls and fumbled away opportunities against Sea, dropped balls against AZ in scoring scenarios early.

So even if we changed what we are doing on O....that stuff stops any from working

True. Just when we are finally moving the chains, something always happen. Whether a big fumble at the wrong time, a drop pass that would have moved the chains or our players dropping a sure TD. It baffles me sometimes how this always happen to us. While I do agree accountability starts up top, players are still the ones that have to go out there and execute. Heck, you can have the best OC in history and if the players suddenly forgot how to protect the ball, protect the QB or make a catch, it all won't mean a thing.

he is who i feared he would be.

it's just a shame the players can't execute perfectly, which apparently is needed for shula´s offense to work cause even just one mistake throws everything off and they can never adjust the offense to get back on track.

it's also a shame that opposing defenses adapt to what we do because that just hurts our set in stone gameplan. i mean what's a team to do? adapt and adjust mid game to do something that works? who does that?

It isn't hindsight for everyone

Sometimes history is a bitch.  And when you bring it up, you get shouted down with all these reasons why it will be different this time, and maybe you get that ONE example where the historical trend didn't hold.

Anyone want to guess how many coaches who didn't produce a winning record in their first two years with a team went on to have successful careers there?

To answer your question directly, this is Rivera's last year on his contract. Clearly if things didn't go well he wouldn't be retained. When a new coach comes in he brings in his own coordinators/staff.  Therefore, whichever OC was interviewed, he would look at it as only a one year deal, possibly, and then look elsewhere for a long-term deal. No wonder Panthers got turned down by everyone and went with the "oh its for continuity lets promote shula" thing.

    • Let it all out bro.   At the end of the day Charlotte fans just aren't that passionate as other fans. The Panthers and Hornets crowds are wack.    Go to a Canes game and you will understand this. Tell the family I said hi and Happy Father's Day.
    • Dude you have no idea what you're talking about. Best place to live?  LMAO... that's your criteria...  Charlotte gets put all over those lists too... come on man... and those lists have zero to do with sports. I'm done after this bc I'm punching down intellectually here... The Panthers have been bad for 6 years now. You are obviously young and not overly educated based off the "dunks" you're putting out there that certainly are, so let me educate you today on the Panthers. The Panthers sold out for well over a decade straight. BOA has been as good an environment as there is when the team is good.  Fan support for the Panthers has been incredible when the team has even remotely reciprocated. The idea that Charlotte doesn't support the Panthers is utter BS. People in Raleigh have the biggest little brother syndrome of all time... Nobody outside of the Triangle cares about any of your "vaunted" sports team outside of Duke-UNC in basketball on a national scale. Sure, the Canes are great. But nationally, the WWE dwarfs the NHL in ratings. More people care about Cody Rhodes than Sebastian Aho... or anyone else in the NHL for that matter... I doubt less than 5% of anyone in this state outside of Raleigh even knows who that is... that's a knock on Aho who is a great player, it's just the NHL barely makes a ripple in the overall hierarchy of American sports. It's not in the same universe as the NFL or NBA no matter how badly you want to tell yourself otherwise. Raleigh is not a big-time sports city, no matter how much you want to scream into the abyss about it. Neither is Charlotte. But no one here is making such a nonsense argument... LOL it's good to be young and to be ignorant enough to be confidently wrong... WTF are you even on this board though since Charlotte is so beneath you? There is an actual discussion board on this very site for Raleigh sports since they are so superior...  Maybe it's bc I'm watching Idiocracy with my son, but your timing is perfect, my man... The dumbest among us have become the most confidence in their ignorance... God Bless America!!
    • You do know the biggest military base in the US is located just an hour from Raleigh in Fort Bragg right? Military families are family oriented. A hour drive to games is nothing compared to traveling 3 hours to Charlotte.   Cmon man there is nothing happening in Western Carolina other than Charlotte. I only go west for outdoor activities and some nature/mountain views.
