This is pathetic.

And deserves a spot in this forum because it relates to you as fans of this game. This is absolutely pitiful.

It is everything that is wrong with our sport, summed up in one play. For some context, #47 for UGA was ejected for "targeting" here, a new rule this year that forbids players from allowing their helmet to be anything more than an advertisement for the NCAA. The NCAA claims it was implemented to keep players from using their helmet as a weapon, but has gone on to mean oh so much more on a weekly basis this season. The call, however, isn't what's of note in this gif..

Note the flag? Ref had it out, holding, ready to toss it as soon as any contact with the QB was made. This, is exactly what the problem is with trying to legislate hits out of football. We see it time and time again at every level of the sport on a weekly basis. Refs throwing the flag first, asking questions later. if there is a big hit that draws crowd noise, a tackle on a significant player, etc etc, you see refs content to throw the flag and sort it all out after that.

It should not be this way. Refs should not be "getting it wrong" as much as they are. Throwing a flag should be a near indisputable decision or it shouldn't be thrown at all. This is pathetic and the committees who have implemented these "safety rules" should be ashamed or themselves.

There HAS to come a point where we stop trying to legistlate hits out of football. There HAS to come a point where we accept our game is what it is.

did the referee ever throw the flag?

at first, I thought 47 was going to obliterate the qb until he backed off.

it's obvious the ref thought the same thing, thus the reason he grabbed his flag.

the flag was thrown and 47 was ejected

as long as people keep suing for past injuries, the rules will keep changing.

Language in contracts needs to be updated to reflect the tendency to sue as soon as you run out of money. Technology needs to continue to be researched and developed for protection, not just 3 or 4 new "rules" that are there for the sole purpose of saving face.

it wouldn't matter. people will continue to sue as long as there are long term injuries and effects from the game.

really the rule changes have always happened and time it happens people gripe about how it's killing football, but it never does and it won't.

it's just not that big of a deal in the whole scheme of thingsd, imo. in a few years no one will care about the targeting rule because the calling of it will back off, fans will have gotten used to it, players will have adapted, and people will be complaining about some other new rule.

the game has always changed and evolved for different reasons, usually for player safety and everyone gets used to it.

What a vicious helmet crushing play that guy in the gif delivered!! whoa baby!

It wasn't vicious, but it was a chippy "here I am" hit. It's pretty clear he could have pulled up and he didn't. Add the head contact and there you go. Crappy college refs are gonna call that.

    • I mean this is legit AF statement....you don't spend that draft capital on a project just like you don't trade up for an injured RB either, which was done in the same draft.  That draft IMO was a necessary evil for DM to learn from his mistakes (I think he did but some may not). Also I have to mention I'm a big Coker fan and think getting him as an UDFA was obv a steal.  Coker is the better WR2 at this point as Legette and its not even debatable unfortunately.  Give him year 3 but don't expect much from him.  Continue in the offseason with adding as much talent and competition on the roster as possible including WR.  Or just trade his ass for peanuts and continue to build roster by any means.......
    • Losing him was a huge loss. Look at how the Bears went from a 5 win team to now a 11 win team. The Lions offensive line is bad this year, secondary is bad and Campbell going for it on 4th down all the time has cost them games instead of taking the Field Goals. Goff is inconsistent as well.
    • Nah we just talking about giving a platform and normalizing predators (who both beat women) opinions and celebrating it if it fits your narrative.  If that's fun I'm fine being a miserable fug by not supporting P.O.S like that. N b4 you call me a libtard or some other dumb ish know I'm an Anarchist/Libertarian and believe both these dudes should get a complete ass whooping (at min) or something worse for what they have done to women in this world.
