Cam Newton on 3rd Down in 2nd Half

Gucci Mane

the boxscore story is Cam was awful.

The reality was very, very different - his first few drives were awful, but he was killer on 3rd down and he had a lot of dropped balls after the first quarter that would have really changed the look of his numbers.

Cam played a good game overall, made the plays he needed to, and really got out of the funk he was in early it seemed.  Ofc, he continues to misfire deep, which is kind of weird given his strength there the previous two seasons... but I'm not concerned, he will figure it out.

A lot of the reason i think he misfires down field is he kind of stutters like a real quick pump fake, and then he leans back before spinning it down field which pushes his shoulders up causing the ball to sail. Hes leaning back because he should have already thrown the ball but since he does the stutter, the pocket collapses more.

He was a little too geeked up early, once he settled down and settled in he played pretty well.

The NE defense has decent overall numbers, but they are 30th in the NFL in rush defense, and they haven't played a QB quite like Cam yet.  I am not saying they haven't faced a QB as good as Cam, after all they played Brees recently, but they haven't played a QB that can cause as many issues with his feet as his arm.

It will be interesting to see how they handle it.  Their defense does not have the type of  team speed that San Fran has.  They are big and physical, but not very fast.

Where as last week we saw two teams that are so similar, this week you will see teams that are polar opposites

Manuel and Buffalo. They should've won.

Cam can and should be playing better. He had a poor game and if we had lost everyone would be talking about it.

You guys defend him no matter what and it gets old. Even Cam knows he needs to be better. These kind of mistakes in the post season will lose the game easy. Yes he made some good plays but a number one overall pick should be after three years. He has been playing poorly the past couple games and what I'd really like to see is him play how he did when he first started winning several games ago; throwing the check downs, making smart plays and taking what the defense gives him.

Here we go. I didn't see anyone saying that he doesn't need to improve. What young QB is totally perfect and does not have any areas whatsoever that they could improve upon? It's funny, posters like you have been mostly absent since mid October. I wonder why?

I believe Cam started 2-10 which means he went 14-22 over the last 3 quarters or so.  When you add in the 3-4 drops over that time frame he was extremely efficient, especially considering how much pressure he was under.  He got smacked around almost as must as Kaepernick but where the SF guy looked scared pooless by the end of the game, Cam stayed calm and cool and continued delivering passes right into the hands of his receivers.  That's what an elite QB does when facing a tough defense.  Just because he didn't put up 400 yards doesn't mean he didn't have a very good game (outside of that 1st quarter of course).

You started out great, could agree with everything you said. Then you just kinda went...a little south.

When the post season does get here, these are exactly the type of games that you may need to win. It may have been ugly, but it was a win. On the road, against a very good team, with a very good Defense.

Wait until we actually do lose before you want answers only a lose can provide.

I see more comparisons I guess. Lots of similarities on Offense and Defense. They may be a tad more aggressive offensively, but we both are methodical, time consuming O's that can score at the end of those drives.

Defenses both want to apply pressure, they just have fewer athletes, and more injuries.

Play good football, move the ball and score, sounds like the same team. Just different approaches.

    • Except it takes those QB's a few years to develop because they needed to learn the mental side of the game and have it catch up to their physical attributes. Bryce was supposed to be a QB savant who already had a fully developed mental side of the game and that was going to make up for his lack of physical ability.  And his lack of NFL level QB physical traits has been clear as day to anyone who has watched him the last 3 years, mainly, he just doesn't have an NFL arm, he can't zip the ball into tight spaces or throw on a line down the field like is needed at this level.
    • Don’t recall seeing many of his interviews but what strikes me is that he engages and goes in depth. Even with the cliche answers as referenced by OP come across somewhat thoughtful.  Very likable personality despite being someone who can crush an average person like I can crush a paper cup. I knew Motons mother had a career at MSU but was looking on the google and found that Mushin Muhammad personally knew Motons grandfather.   His late grandfather was a professor at MSU.   Cool guy.  Interesting family and small world.
    • I think people aren’t patient enough with Young. It can take a few years for a QB to develop. Look at Darnold, Baker and most recently Daniel Jones.   he hasn’t been able to put up big passing numbers either cause of how much we run the ball. You can tell our coaching staff still hasn’t took the training wheels off Bryce and let him go all out. We’ve had some pretty bad receivers as well. We finally got a true number one last year and look how much Bryce improved. Still we didn’t really have any depth behind TMac. Coker was hurt for a lot of the year and XL was our #2. How many big plays or TDs has XL dropped? I think this year can be the year we see Bryce able to hit his stride. If not then we can start looking for another qb but I just ask people to be patient.
