3 Comeback Wins

What started as Cam's biggest weakness, due to whatever the national media decides, seems to have become a strength.

That's not just 3...it's 3 in a fuging row. Cam has ice in his veins and the confidence now to put it to use. In SF he lead us to a game winning FG. Against NE he found Ginn and this week that freak starts the drive by having to convert a long 4th down deep in his own territory en route to making several clutch throws AND a TD to Greg Olsen to steal the win after a horrendous start...on the road.

I don't know that Cam has "arrived", but I do know that he's damn close. Meanwhile Luck...RG3...SMF...lulz.

I'm not gonna lie, after the ARI game I was questioning certain people on this team and their ability to win games fug the close ones. I was really upset cause I loved the way the players looked up to Rivera. So thankful things turned around and we're not just winning games against bad teams but blowing them out and winning the close ones against good teams. We deserve this as a fan base. 8-3 feels great.

Just to be clear, it wasn't always on the defense when we lost close games.  There were plenty of opportunities for Cam that didn't happen as well.

But when people talk about "clutch", there have also been numerous times where we have taken the lead late and lost those games because the defense didn't hold those leads.  If they had, his career 4QC and GWDs would look a lot different.

Well, Seattle does come to mind. Still, our defense blew it against Kansas City, Dallas, Tampa, and Atlanta.

Chicago too.  Even after the pick 6 when Smitty fell down, we made a field goal late to take the lead.  Then Cutler ran about 5,000 slants in a row and kicked his own field goal.

I'm glad we're winning the close games, and it does wonders for our team's confidence (which is by far the more important effect) but let me clear on this: there is no such thing in the sports world as "clutch."

Human beings have many wonderful traits, but also some glaring faults, and a combination of the two is that we're excellent at spotting patterns and trends, but the downside is we see patterns where none exist. That means we imagine that QB A who ends up succeeding one of their drives just because it happens to be the last one of the game gets viewed as clutch even if nothing else changed about the parameters of their performance.

So, I'm enjoying seeing some "clutch" play from Cam, but I'd much rather this team clean up their mistakes and get back to putting teams away early. Close games are not a recipe for continued success.

    • Sober. Still feeling it. I really like how the schedule is laid out for us. Perfect for a new HC and rebuilding team. Aside from the Bengals, there aren't  any good teams before the bye. Chargers will be, but they're having to figure poo out just like we are and they'll be coming here for an early game. That one is a toss up. I like our defense against them. I think we'll give the Bengals a fight, but I wouldn't put money on us winning that one. But the saints can be swept. They're beat up and just don't have much going on. They'll be at the bottom of the division. I feel like we will split with the falcons and the bucs. There's nothing scary about the raiders or that washington team. Chicago is another toss up, but they aren't scary either....not yet anyways. We're getting them early in the season so I like our chances. I especially like our defense against a rookie QB. And the broncos....boring. Giants....again, boring. Looking at this, we've got a good defensive thing going on. I think the unit will be better this year a d we're in season 2 of Evero. I like us especially against rookie QBs, and we'll have at least 3 we're facing before the bye. We come in and play smash mouth football and just keep hitting (pounding) away and I think we're competitive. It's that schedule after the bye that scares me. Hopefully by that point they've built up a lot of confidence. You get a scrappy dawg that's got some confidence and a lot of fight in him and you've always got a shot. I think that's what we'll be this year. This year isn't about winning all the games. It's about building confidence and learning what we've got to do.
    • To be honest I just haven't been paying attention. I have PTSD from all these shitty Tepper hires. I'm just going to wait and see what takes the field.
    • What is extremely rare?  Taking a young quarterback when you have a starter?  If that is what you are referring to, at one time it wasn't that rare.
