Officially Concerned about the Offense

I'm guessing you didn't watch the Atlanta/SF game the week before.

 

It was SF's last game in Candlestick. They were trying to win their division too, and are viewed as a serious threat for the SB. In comparison, we were on the road against a division rival that knows us very well, and it was the final game for a future HOF member.

 

In case you didn't see it, SF was in serious jeopardy of losing the game until a fluke interception bailed them out.

So that game (SF/ATL) is why Cam was overthrowing the WRs and TEs during most of the first half?  When our opponents'  start determining our QBs unforced errors, we need to refocus.

When it comes to overthrows in general, it's not the worst problem your QB can have. Luck's been called out at times for it, and last year the magnifying glass was on Flacco for overthrowing receivers.

Yes, it is something that Cam does at times.  Good thing is that it is very correctable with focus and coaching.  From what I have heard from Dorsey and Cam, they both recognize it and work on it every day.  We will see fewer and fewer of them as Cam continues to progress.

Also if you go on si.com and check out cam's passing splits, you can see exactly how many incompletions are ruled as overthrows. Cam's is a little high compared with other QBs but his underthrows are relatively low and his wide throws are average at worst.

Yep.  It would be MUCH worse if he was irratic with both overthrows and underthrows.  That is the mark of a bad QB.

 

Cam sometimes has a tendancy to not get his weight transferred to his front foot quick enough....which causes the overthrow.  Sometimes this is because of garbage around his feet and sometimes it is just a lapse in concentration.  But, it is ONE issue....and is easy to correct.

LaFell's hand are very small for a WR, and it makes him more prone to drop passes. It doesn't help matters that Cam rarely puts a soft touch on his passes. We're probably going WR in the upcoming draft so we won't have to worry about this much longer.

I think this period of time with out a wr is good for Cam, it forces him to have to become nearly perfect as a qb. 

Cam is somewhat playing similar to Brady's 1st/2nd super bowl run.

Lafell's hand size is 8.75 inches, well below the league average, and unusually small for a receiver of his height. Of course there are other factors involved in catching such as hand eye coordination. I don't have hard evidence on this, but I think that shorter receivers have better hand eye coordination to make up for their smaller hands, while taller receives have lower hand eye coordination, but make up for it with bigger hands. Lafell is at a disadvantage in this respect.

Yep, just checked his combine numbers and you're right, 8.75" hands.  That's tiny hands for a guy his size.  I'm 3" shorter and 30 pounds lighter and I just measured my hands... 8.75" and I would consider my hands fairly average for my size.

Remember how Pickles had small hands and would fumble the snap a lot? He had bigger hands than Lafell, although not by much.

Actually Smitty has pretty big hands for a guy his size, im surprised not many people have known this.

You're right Maestro...Cam is never high on his throws. It's the receiver's fault 100% of the time. Never mentioned by game announcers either. Figment of everyone's imagination.
