Looking ahead - cap hits

We still need to pay for a good LT, RT, RG, and only one WR is on the books. Also, none of our secondary this year is even accounted for.....none are under contract.

So once you simply field a respectable team and get starters that will take a nice chunk of that cap space.....it isn't just room to improve. We have tons do starters this year are set up to walk

Exactly.

Lets say we can get Gross to come back for 1 year.

How much would that cost? 3mill? 4? 5?   That would be right off the top of our 25 million. Now we have 20.

Lets say Amini goes back to LG and we let RG be the weak link. Kug and the DT fights it out in training camp, we draft a RT in first and second round.  Still at 20.

Ginn wants to return, 3 years...12 million?  Hit is say 4 million this season 17 Mill.

Mitchell wants to return 4 years....16 million    Hit is say 5 million this season  12 mill left.

Munny wants to return  4 years 20 million   Another 5 off the top.  8 mill left.

We need to retain some depth at OLine and DLine  lets say that costs 6 million.    2 Mill Left just to sign draft picks.

That leaves us with 1 CB and 1 Saftey under contract and 2 WR's that caught a pass this year.

Olsen our only TE.

Obviously these are random numbers, but I hope it illustrates my point. 25 million is gone in just a few players.

If you tag Hardy that number goes to 13 million instantly, if not less.

If Cam wants the 100Mill+ 5year+ deal we are out of space with just that and the Hardy Tag.

Verses, tagging Hardy, getting an extra 1 or a combination of 2nd's + 3rds. and retaining the rest of the defense.

Cam's deal is set to be renewed, Luke's next season, Star/Short shortly after.

why not keep him and get rid of Johnson in 2 years?? Hardy has upside is his age at the moment

This would also be an option.

You set up Hardy's deal to have a small base salary first 2 years, then it baloons in 2016 when you cut/june1 cut Johnson.

Issues are

1) would hardy do this

2) is hardy worth the same money

3) what if johnson is better than hardy

After what I saw Gettle do last year, I no longer worry about the cap, it is a joke. All we talked about here and every article last offseason said how screwed we were bc of the cap. Fast forward, we are like 16 million under the cap and signed all kind of players.

Yep. We have no cap space despite having it. A HUGE chunk of our starting roster isn't under contract.

Gano will shave a little more as well

1) idk just hoping so

2) I think yes. due to age and production. I believe Johnson would be 31+

3) toss up

but I do find this interesting:

To put things in perspective, fellow defensive end Charles Johnson signed a six-year deal in 2011 that was worth $76 million. Over the past two years, he has tallied 76 tackles and 23.5 sacks. Over the same time frame, Hardy has 126 tackles and 26.0 sacks.

Looks like if we are 12 million under now and roll another 12 million this year forward we could have around 25 million to spend. Guys like Godfrey will be a big question. Do we keep him with a 7 million cap or make him a June 1st cut and eat a few million in dead cap space. I don't know how much more dead cap space we want to incur since it is pretty high already. I guess it depends who of the 1 year contract guys we want to resign and who we think under contract underperformed.

Godfrey would probably be willing to restructure,  considering that he knows cutting him is a real possibility.   I didn't realize how important Mikell had become to our defense before Sunday.  I'd would have felt better about Godfrey coming in rather then Lester.

I know these are random numbers but most people's calculations assume that a 3 year 12 million contract is spread out equally and it rarely is.  If we gave Ginn a 3 year 12 million contract for example we would likely give him 4 million signing bonus up front so he has a prorated signing bonus of 1.3 million per year.  If you give him 1 million in salary in 2014 guaranteed he gets a total of 5 million in 2014 in real money but the cap hit is only 2.3 million in year 1.  In the other 2 years he would cost hypothetically roughly 4 million in year 2 and 5.7 in year 3 when all the dead cap space from Hurney contracts and the TV money hits.

So actually 25-30 million could go much further.  The same kind of formula applies to Hardy or anyone else we would sign.

Just sayin............................
