O-line has to be the priority.

Works both ways, if you don't have a running game then they don't need to being extra guys in the box to stop the run. Which leaves more guys in coverage

Problem is we have a few running threats and no WR.

Cam can help the running game. He can't catch his own passes.

We had the lowest YAC avg. In the league. Not only were defenders not afraid of our WR. But they knew even if they caught the ball they would be able to tackle them fast.

Tackle is a potentially huge need if gross retires, it's already a big need

Gross controls the bulk of our offseason IMO, however I expect him back on a 2-3 year, cap friendly but fair deal.

We currently have one WR under contract. That one WR is approaching 35 years old and is now best suited for the slot. That one wide receiver is no longer a true #1 and can be used to mold his successor and a young guy that will grow and play with Cam for a long time. Wide receiver is the way we need to go assuming one of the top OT prospects doesn't fall right into our laps.

 

Teams are able to stack the box and focus on our running game because no one really respects our passing game outside of Olsen and an aging Steve Smith. We have no consistent deep threat and no one that can get valuable yards after the catch or break a game wide open. Our running game will improve as Amini gets healthy and competition emerges for the RG and RT positions after getting some guys healthy and drafting one more at those positions in the second or third rounds.

 

We will have a much clearer idea where we are going early in this draft after FA but we have ignored the wide receiver position for far too long. It is unlikely we find Gross' replacement at LT at #28 and I'd be willing to bet an impact WR can benefit this team right away compared to a rookie offensive linemen who will likely be on roller skates his first season and struggle against any upper-eschelon pass rushers. Last years top offensive tackles in the draft struggled all season long and while some mid-round linemen played well.

OLine is the most urgent position to draft. We have know LT right now bring him back still needs to get replaced since he's up their in age. The OLine protects are franchise QB. The Oline opens holes for are expensive backfield. The Oline blocks to give the WR enough time to get open. Does a WR do have that not even close. Not saying its not important just not the top issue. If Cam didn't have the ability to escape so much are line would have been light years worse. OLine you build from the trenches not the flashing positions.

We had a top ten rushing attack. Bottom of the bottom as a passing attack. Am I missing something?

Stats are just numbers. There were no deep balls. There were deep balls when Cam had time. The OLine got no push when DWill and JStew ran the ball. Cam and Tolbert were the attack due to undesigned Cam rushing plays and Tolbert running over people. The line needs work. Esp if we can get Nicks for cheap as our #2, we def got OL in first round, CB in 2nd.

This is the same argument we had on the defense last year.  DB or DT.  One will enhance the other.  If you go WR you get Better, faster route runners means less time to protect the QB meaning less sacks.    If you go OL then QB has more time to throw making mediocre WR look good.

 

IMO I think we need to make this decision after the free agency opens up and we address it.    If we sign Hicks then we probably shoot after OL.  If we were to sign someone like Clady we will go WR.

The potential problem is if you look at most draft boards the premier tackles will be gone before we draft.

I don't think we can go wrong with either a WR or an OL due to the fact either could be an upgrade.  The fact of the matter is without a halfway decent OL, you can't run, can't set up the play action pass, can't get those short yardage TDs, and protect Cam (our Franchise).

 

You can have the best OL in the world, give Cam 8 seconds to throw, run for 200 yards a game, but when you NEED that last minute drive, you need guys who can catch it, who can get open, who can make a play.

 

I don't think we can go wrong so long as we pick the best WR and/or OL in the draft and FA.  We'll only get better.
