Moving to North Carolina Area

I have good intentions putting this thread up.  I put in the smack area because I have no idea what this is going to start.  I have a bachelors degree in accounting and then joined the Army infantry where I did two deployments to Afghanistan.  I got out of the Army as an E-5.  I just signed a lease to an apartment in Durham.  I am from Minnesota, but lived in Fayetteville for a year while in the Army, so I am somewhat familiar with the area.  

 

I am basically looking for any advice I can get on the area.  With my background is Charlotte a better fit?  I know that I may be considered a Yankee and I know I personally love the southern accent and most of the southern culture, other than the racist types.  I have a wife and a one year old child.  I am an avid Panthers fan and always have been since I was 6 or 7.  Same with UNC basketball.  I am down to become a Hornets fan and since NC doesnt have a baseball team it means I can still be a Twins fan. Just looking for friendly help.  I do not have a job lined up yet, so maybe I could get some networking done here.  Thanks again.

I'm from Raleigh its right next to Durham i think you should fit in just fine but then again i don't like durham, raleigh better area and charlotte is great so

Ugh, fuging Lumberton sucks. Goldsboro is a shithole as well.

I was just looking at a map.  I live on the outskirts of Durham, between the centers of Raleigh and Durham from the looks of it.  It is close to where 540 and 40 intersect.  According to the map the airport is pretty close.  It looks like a decent area from the outside looking in, which is my perspective.

Ive been to 2 Panthers games in Minnesota and one in Cincy, but I did not make it to a Panthers game when I lived in Fayetteville.  I am pretty jacked for next season so I can go to a game.  Too bad I picked the point that is pretty much furthest from the beginning of next season to move hahaha.

I'm going to put this in both the moving threads as I moved to NC from VA within the last 6 months myself, but previously lived in NC from 1993-2000.

 

1. Asheville has the second highest cost of living in the Southeast, ranking second only to Atlanta.

2. Charlotte/Mecklenburg County has the highest taxes in NC and the second highest in the southeast- second again only to Atlanta.

3. NC is 7th highest income tax in the country.

4. Charlotte/Mecklenburg County has the highest sales tax in the state (7.25%).

5. Depending on where you live, again Charlotte/Mecklenburg being the highest in the state, property taxes (owing a home) is 3x higher than what I paid in VA if I would have bought inside the city. I purchased in the county and am still paying about 25% more in property taxes than I did in VA. The same size/same priced home I had in VA which cost me almost $900 annually in property taxes, here is $2600 annually. Hence my buying a house in the county.

 

If I ever decided to be close to Charlotte- can't imagine that I would, but- I'd live across the border in SC and commute.

 

I love Asheville, think it's a great town. Good food, good music scene and the mountains, camping, and outdoor lifestyle. But Asheville is definitely a city of haves and have-nots, with not a lot in between. As expensive as it is to live there, it is filled with what I call working poor. People trying to make their living off the tourism industry, which is restaurants, entertainment, etc. which are not very well paying jobs.

Sounds like smack in the middle of RTP in the Mooresville area? Great area in the middle of the Triangle, but hellish traffic.

Morrisville = between Raleigh and Durham

Mooresville = between Charlotte and Statesville

Look at union county, nc. Charlotte's neighbor to the southeast. Great communities and low taxes compared to clt.

I love it here since moving from clt four years ago.
