Rivera signs 3 year contract extension

We have an elite front....

Our secondary is a joke....regardless of what people think of our slightly improved S play.

We have an elite front as of today. As of January. We are one player walking away from having just a good front. You take a bookend defensive end off the line, a sack per game guy, and you replace him with.... who? Frank Alexander? You immediately go back to having a double team on CJ and your defense looks a lot more like the one of two years ago than last year's defense. The elephant in the room is that our defensive line play of two years ago wasn't bad at all. Dwan did a fantastic job at DT two years ago. I don't think that Star and Short, at this early point in their careers, are big time pass rushing threats. Short will likely get there. Perhaps they push him out to DE and keep Dwan and Star up the middle? The difference between our defense being elite and being good is the elite pass rush and if you cripple that pass rush, you cripple the defense.

You're 100% right about our secondary still being terrible. We thought we could pass it off without addressing it during the season but it didn't pan out. Look at the teams that made it further than us. They all have a premiere play that was made by a member of the secondary. We didn't get that level out of our guys. In fact, they hurt us more than helped us. And the myth of our improved safety play is a product of that elite front. Nobody had time to challenge those guys and when they did, we were picked apart. If the pass rush didn't get there, it became deadly obvious how poor our coverage was. Robert Lester was flat out bad when Quentin MIkkel went down. And even though Mike Mitchell brings a serious element of nasty with him, he's not a traditional playmaker. He's more Jarrod Cooper than Mike Minter. While I do think he's starter material, and wouldn't be upset with him as our starter going into next season, we have to upgrade around him in order to protect his deficiencies in pass coverage.

I think Ron Rivera finally learned how to coach like he's got nothing to lose this year. That is an asset that will serve us well in the future. Not a lot of coaches have the balls to make some of the calls he made this year.

Those 4th conversion significantly masked the deficiencies in the offense to keep us winning..

if fine with this as long as jerry's willing to cut his losses if rivera shits the bed and proves 2013 was an anomaly. no lame duck bullshit. the last time that happened we went into a half-decade draught that dismantled both the team and the fanbase.

Things don't stay the same..... just as Hardy improved to be what he was this year. Guys like Star will continue to improve. Front won't be what it was minus Hardy......everything evolves/changes.

Even if it didn't evolve.....it wouldn't go back to what it was bc we actually have good DT play now vs then.

Hardy had a great year......he also benefited from DT play he had never had before. DT play was by far the biggest improvement we had this year. All the attention goes to Luke/TD/Hardy and CJ. Starts with the DTs IMO.

okay so two questions

i would like to think he learned form the 2010 debacle.  this franchise was an embarrassment, he knew it and the fans showed it.  i dont see him making the same mistake twice and i'd also like to think Gettlemen has more power than Hurney did for that season.  Hurney and Fox were really close, so close he probably didnt want to fire him.

I'm not sold on his decision making. He started just going for it out of fear, not because he truly believed he should go for it. Now that he's safe again I'm not sure he'll be as gutsy when it comes to some of these calls.

Ron earned this and I'm glad they pulled that trigger quick.

We have a busload of issues to work through, and this wasn't one of them.

If you are a hater who wants a new HC because of ___________. I recommend looking at the past decade of the Raiders and Browns and the volumes of suck that a new HC every two years (or less) brings.

Make no mistake, Rivera saved his ass this year.  When we first hired him, I thought, "Alright, I like this guy.  He's a player's coach, defensive mindset, but will have some growing pains."

I liked the hire at first, and expected some tough times.  Then my confidence was beginning to waiver.  After the bad start this year, I though, "Man, can't believe this didn't work out."  I was really bummed about it all.

Then Rivera nutted up and took us to the NFCS crown and a 12-4 record with a lame duck OC.  My faith was restored.

A TON of credit goes out to Rivera for earning his job [and contract].  He really pulled through in the clutch this year, much like Cam did on about 3-4 last minute occassions.

They were still solidly behind him when we were 1-3. I'd call that a good sign.

One of our resident Twitterists should go look for player responses.

K can someone give me cliffsnotes on why super j is universally hated on here

Should be interesting like any other story about how a poster turns into a complete forum pariah

behold the horse.

a noble creature by its design, useful, a companion to man, a bearer of him in battle, a farmer's friend, wild on the plains, majestic, glorious.

all horses have inherent flaws. for instance they poop. their poop stinks. but no one cares because all horses do that.

however, some horses poop more than others. and some horses poop on you. sometimes you're just standing there and all the other horses didn't poop on you but that one horse just blew its poop straight out its horse butt and all over your new pacsun shirt and the joey bag of donuts you just got at moe's. and that just fugs up your day. but even that's forgivable because sometimes the best horses blow poo everywhere and fug up your day but every once in a while you've got that one horse out of millions that does that all. the. fuging. time. blows poo all over you every time you're in sight. blows poo over you and everyone else in the area, in fact, fuging up everyone's moe's and everyone's pacsun shirts and even all over all the other horses, up in the oats and water and poo, all over the sawdust and all over the kids taking pole jumping lessons in the indoor arena behind the main stable and making them cry and making their moms cancel lessons and bankrupting the owner's enterprise.

where this metaphor leads us is that superjthegreat should be made into glue

    • It is a tough decision.  There is another factor.  Is he in game shape?  A tired Hunt is not better than an "in-shape" Corbett.  When coming off an injury, it is natural to want to protect the injured area, even if it is completely healed.  This can cause you to contort your body for no reason, lose fundamentals, and it could lead to other injuries.  For example, I had a knee in high school that required getting taped.  That made me aware of the knee (not used to tape on my knee) and I pulled my groin (favoring or dragging the leg with the tape).  The trainer explained the groin injury the way I do here--but scared money makes no money.  If he is cleared to play, he is cleared to play.  Watch him, rotate him in for a series, etc.  Specifically, I would want to watch the matchup--who is winning more--Corbett or Hunt?  How is the defense reacting (if at all) to Hunt being in?  Etc.
    • Shannon was sued for $50 million (settled out of court, I believe) for forcing sex on his girlfriend during a two-year relationship.  He denies it, but ESPN let him go last April.  Chad Johnson's wife filed a police report because he head-butted her in a car and was put on probation. I had to google it.  I watched the Ray Rice video and when you see it, you realize just how vile and cowardly abusing a woman really is.  But for the same point Aussie tried to make, these women are defenseless, and being phyiscally bigger and stronger does not validate your actions.   I can't even stand to watch Steve Smith.  I can't normalize this kind of behavior--again, I do not think R-P had that in mind when he posted this.  When the reason was exposed, we should realize that we are talking life (quality of) and death (in some cases) here.
    • I can respect the fact that we should not glorify or normalize men who have a history of beating women.  I do not think anyone was thinking of that when they posted this, but if head-butting your wife and unconsensual sex (rape) is something you cannot overlook, I agree with that.  I think they are both half-crazed attention hounds regardless of their pasts.
