Lets get to know: Allen Robinson

Mods move this if you feel it's necessary.............. Since the season is over I wanted to create a draft profile in the upcoming weeks and months on certain college players.  In hopes of providing my personal insight, helping other familiarize themselves with the prospects and provoking a conservation among others.Just higher end players for now, and ones that pertain to our needs. I wanted to start by doing my favorite wr and everyone's favorite topic as of late. I've watched every tape of his on http://draftbreakdown.com/players/ and some twice, and wanted to share my thoughts and offer a breakdown. This is all pre-combine obviously and based just of game film, we can revisit them later if need be. Without further ado.........

The Numbers

6'3 210

2012 -  77,1013,11

2013 - 97,1432,6

Pro's

* Prototypical measurements, great build

*Great YAC

* Catches ball at it's highest point

* Can make the acrobatic catch

* Very fluid athlete and elusive

*Played in pro style system where he ran all the routes

Con's

*Offers little to no effort in the run game, often times just gets in the way at best

*Lets ball get into body to often

* Not a burner, and needs to learn to rely more on physicality to get separation

The breakdown

I think Robinson would make a ideal receiver in our system. I think he has all the traits to succeed, fast, physical, athletic, separates, makes the difficult catches, and makes plays after the catch. I like players who have done it over multiple years, and are a focal point of their team. Despite being the only real weapon on their team and shoddy q.b play he did it consistently. Had at least 5 catches and over 60 yds, in every game this year but one. High ceiling, high floor player

I also wanted to address those who complain the he catches a lot of screens. If you as much of Robinson as I have you would notice Penn. St. had real struggles in 2013 with their freshman quarterback. You could argue he would have had 3 or 4 more touches if not for errant passes. The team was almost forced to keep it short, and this I believe shows in his lack of red zone production

NFL comparison: Brandon Marshall

Projection: Late 1st - early 2nd

The film

The triple move(yes triple move) at 2:30 was when I feel in love with the guy. He leaves the defenders in another area code

The screen he caught at 2;58, reversed field and ran 65 yards was a thing of beauty. Yeah that doesn't happen in the NFL but it really hightlights his elusiveness

Wipes the floor with Syracuse. See  the :24 sec mark

Just for fun I wanted to include his H.S basketball highlights. Mutliple dunks, high rising blocks, etc. gives you a feel on how athletic he is.  See :53 sec mark

What round is he expected to go in? I really really think we should double up on WR in the first two rounds to give Cam some help. If we have the money I think we should (and especially if we can't keep Hardy) try to get Rodgers-Cromartie for our secondary.

If the Broncos win the SB I'm hearing he might retire

Late 1st-Early 2nd right now

Oh alright I thought he was more of a late 2nd, early 3rd. Haven't followed college players very closely yet, but I like the looks of Benjamin and Jordan Matthews. I'll look into Robinson though.

I will have to be honest..I did not see one snap of Allen Robinson's career..and I am sad for it bc he looks to be really good after the catch and is prettty explosive out of his cuts.

At 6'3 he will give that Josh Gordon type threat of size/speed/rte running hopefully without the drugs..unlike Josh.

    • I'm super excited about the guys we're getting back, and fortunately this year, outside of Robert Hunt, we haven't had any season-threatening injuries. Rico has earned the start, but I am excited to have both available.  The team is finally turning into the run-first team Canales said he wanted to be. As for JT Sanders, I think he has lost the most be being out. He is probably our best receiving TE, but with the emergence of Mitchell Evans & with him and Tommy Tremble both absolutely balling in run blocking, it will be hard to fix something that isn't broken. I'm hoping Turk Wharton can help with our pass rush. We really havent gotten to see him much due to injuries, but we desperately need anyone to provide some pass rush juice, which is what he was brought to do. I'm the most excited about Jalen Coker returning. Theilen may have been the most clutch last year, but I've watched a lot of film, and Coker was the most consistent WR we had when he was out there last year.  I think he can be an ideal #2 to Tmac. While Coker doesn't have the raw athleticism XL does, his route running, savvy, and overall football IQ simply make him better.  I think with the fact Coker can play both outside and in the slot will give our pass game more versatility.  We have been running a lot of 2 TE sets, and I think Tmac & Coker should be the primary WRs for 12 personnel. The other WRs (XL, Tremayne, Renfrow, & Horn) all have roles, but I dont think any of them can fully replace what Coker can do. I do think Renfrow will be inactive this week if everyone is healthy bc of how valuable Tremayne is for ST and as a run blocker. So happy that we are playing meaningful football heading into November. We are still almost certainly a year away, but we are absolutely moving in the right direction
    • Better than a fragile starter, though
