Should I take this job?

From whispers I heard that I might get a job offer from TWC and it pays almost 22% more than what I'm making now plus it will look really good on my resume and can open new doors for career advancement (with another company of course).  Downside, this job is only good for about a year.  They offer pretty good severance package as well... My wife thinks I should take it but I'm not a risk taker... What say you huddle?

I would think the ultimate question is: do you foresee you sticking with your current job indefinitely? If not, and your goal is achieve this "career advancement" then I would do it.

Then again being unemployed sucks ass.

There is no movement at my current job... I maxed out my current growth...  One more thing... My wife also works for TWC.

I would try and figure out where I want to be at the end of this job you are considering taking. Then figure out if there is another way to get to the same point. Sometimes taking the risk scares the crap out of you (been self employed for 10 years now) but you often find out that your mind can make things far worse than they really are. I would say go for it. The only regrets you have are the risks you didn't take.

I tend to see red flags too, but a lot of that depends on what they were doing in previous jobs. Certain fields, especially IT, it's easier to track promotions/advancement than in other fields. I'm not going to freak out on someone who went from IT help desk to Network Admin Assistant when changing jobs. Now if it's McD's fry guy to Taco Bell waffle stuffer, that's another thing.

No Comcast is buying them out and going to lay off a lot of employees, you would be a new guy with less experience than others. You could end up jobless, just stick to your job now and wait for a more reliable chance.

Odds are that this is an employment contract.  So, the buyout would be irrelevant.  Comcast would have to buy out the contract.

Ok, in the interest of full disclosure, I'm an actor so my entire career is a fugging risk. IOW, take what I'm about to say with a grain of salt.

I'd go for it, but I would do so looking at it like this...

Can I do the job and do it so well that I'll get recommendations & a resume boost from it?

You've already said yes to the resume, your wife should have/be able to get an idea if your bosses/supervisors are dicks that might try to fug you over on the recommendations if you offend them.

Will I like going to work?

It's hard to succeed if you hate your job.

Can I learn more about my craft here?

This is simply something I see a lot of people overlook. Put simply, if you aren't learning new things & you're not filthy rich, you are in a dead end job.

Last but most important IMO...

I will be making (in your case) 22% more. Unless we are struggling, EVERY FUGGING PENNY of that percentage goes to savings because this job is temporary!

Just do it. Trust me.

    • I'd like to see the gameday chats come back, especially if you can get it mobile compatible and like those support chats that stay on the screen even when you move around the site. We could use them during CLTFC and Hornets games now too.
    • There's a lot of truth here, but at the same time, that one year of production we might be paying for is actually paying for a development arc. And a lot of players have those. QB is the most complicated position in sports, hands down.  I'm not saying Bryce will make it past the hump this year, the odds are stacked against him just like any QB in the league that isn't already considered an elite player (and there are only about 5-8 of those at most). Arcs happen, and slow arcs happen, too. Sam Darnold seemed a wash up for the Jets and a horrible mistake. He was better with us, but still couldn't carry a bad team on his shoulders (or bad coaching). He went to Minnesota and got a shot under better coaching with more mature eyes to see the field. Something sparked and then he took his team to the Super Bowl and brought home a ring. Baker Mayfield had a similar arc, and may yet hit the big game. Hell, locally, Jake Delhomme had one. Or Bryce could flutter back down having already hit his peak. It happens. More often than any of us want to admit. We've paid for a full development arc for Bryce, but we've had it on rookie deal rates and that's been a savings that has let us build out the rest of the team, which was really needed. Maybe we end up diving back into the QB pool in the first round next season. Might be the guy, might not.  But he'll be set up with a better team that Bryce was when he started. Or maybe, just maybe, Bryce adds another seven TDs and loses four INTs on the season. Grabs three more wins and maybe a playoff win, maybe two. It's not completely impossible and that'd be great for the team and for him.  We're just going to have to tune in and see how it plays out. Probably won't be boring.
    • I am holding out hope for a miraculous run this season. But you know the narrative around him is peak delusional when the Panthers social team can post this without even a hint of irony. Four years and almost 50 games into his career he still looks like he's never set foot in the weight room. Really?
