10 Players (only 7 on the roster) are eating 85.3 Million in 2014 cap space

People need to understand that cutting Smitty was the lesser evil this year! Still an evil and did nothing this year for us but really helps out for 2016/17. When Cam and Luke come into play!

Signing ALLL of our "core" players with "backloaded" and heavily guaranteed contracts at the SAME time was bad.....real bad.

I think Gman had legit reasons (in his way of thinking anyway), both cap related and locker room related to release Smitty... I just think he went about in the worst way possible PR wise. Then for him to sign a guy like Harper... To me that just compounds the mistake. You know Harper, being a vet, will want to be a leader and may ruffle feathers much in the same way that people have suggested Smitty would have done.

This is a great thread and shows what the FO is dealing with.

I don't have any issue with them slow playing the FAs. That's Gman's MO and it works, BUT... From a roster POV I'm not so sure that cutting Smitty was the right move since we have ZERO replacement players there.

WR and LT are glaring roster holes that I just don't see how we're filling short of the draft.

and of that list of top 18 player contracts, Greg Hardy and the bottom 3 are the only ones who were not given a contract by Hurney. Hardy will likely command less money once we hash out the long term deal. I never understood why people thought Hurney was a cap genius because the evidence states otherwise.

If the Hardy deal is going to be less, why isn't it done yet?

Not sure about the Harper thing either, but, he is real good at plugging in guys that fit the system. Sure he has a reason and doesn't give a fug about PR consequences.

Said it before, 12-4 with Ginn at wide out and #2 defense with as many as 6 rooks on the field! Patched over OLine cause of injuries. Dude has convinced me as a fan to try it his way!

This my friends is why restructures are nothing to rejoice over. It steals cap space from the future to create immediate room. Then it gets really ugly when you have to cut the player and eat the dead money with nothing to show for it.

This is also why Gettleman is not signing players to contracts that are getting chunks of guaranteed money, same principle.

You might as well make this an answer to your own thread.. 90% of the huddle just can't seem to wrap their mind around this stuff.

Because he still wants a lot of money. I'm not saying that when we get the long term deal it is going to save us copious amounts of cash, at most it will probably save us 4 or 5 million this year, but more likely only 3 or so. So instead of getting 13 mil he will get 8-10 mill this year, and then more over the next couple.

This thread raises questions like how teams like Raiders, Cowboys, and others that over pay players on a yearly basis get away with doing so and still signing free agents lol

Look at the cowboys this offseason. They had to cut their best 2 defensive players to get under the cap, and their biggest signing is Terrell McClain, the same guy who was our 3rd round bust. They kept kicking the can down the road and it's really screwing them.

My problem is nobody tried to work with Smitty to figure something out.  Which tells me that even if Gettles will say it was "both cap and locker room related," it really was primarily locker room related.  He didn't want Smith on the team.... I understand it can help us in the long term but I wish it had been handled differently
