What if we use the draft to help the future CAP?

well it's not like we didn't draft Klein and Barner... if we go DE early though, I expect CJ is gone next year. That ensures more room to sign Hardy and a solid future DE prospect to fill in thereafter..

I don't think it means CJ is gone next season. I think Hardy departing could be more likely if he wants a huge pay day in excess of CJ. Not saying we should let Hardy walk, or trade Hardy, but if Hardy demands more than CJ I'm not confident of his chances unless he does indeed get rid of CJ.

Question: if Johnson is cut or traded, what would the cap hit be?

Charles Johnson's cap hit will be 17.4mil next year.  His max dead money will be 6 million if cut.

That's 11 million ways to afford Hardy and I wouldn't expect anymore than 8 million to show up in cap hits so there's a few extra million to gain.  And then you have to consider we just freed up that 13 million entirely that is being spent on Hardy's 1 year franchise tag.

Now..  I will say that if CJ doesn't get cut next season then his cap hit will go down to 12.4 which isn't so bad and then we could see him sign a more cap friendly deal thereafter.  Or let him sign elsewhere.

2015 we could have Hardy at less than 10mil that year and CJ around 12..  I could live with that.

sure, but kalil has a reasonable contract.

be prepared for DE and RB picks higher than some people want and a full-scale huddle meltdown

22 million over the next two years is not reasonable for a C.

Even if he is the best lineman that we have.

I have stated this elsewhere, and want to clear this up before someone says anything...I am not a Kalil hater, in fact he is in my top 5 Panthers, but that is a lot of dough, and we have Cam and Luke to pay.

using the draft for the sole reason to help the cap in the future is worse than picking for need.

gettleman is going to take BPA, you just have to decide what his definition of BPA is.

We know he likes big bodies, and he builds teams from the inside out.

We know Rivera has some influence (I believe that is why we are making a mad rush at safeties, because Rivera values the position highly- hence why he was ok with the Godfrey signing- plus if they truly believe Lester can be the SS of the future, he needs to be mentored accordingly)

Everyone and their mom knows we need another OT (if not two) and another WR (if not two). If a good one is there, don't think the Panthers will hesitate to take them, however we aren't going to draft an OT or WR graded at a 6 versus if an 8 LB/DE/S is there.

predicting the draft is impossible because crazy things happen every year, we don't know who we are drafting because we

a.) have no idea who will be available and

b.) don't have access to the Panthers big board.

trust in Cam, the core of our defense, and drafting solid players for the future.

actually i wasn't aware it was that high. for his production value i wouldn't say that's terribly unreasonable, but hopefully he'll extend his contract at some point and negate some of the year-to-year hit

Yup, Hurney strikes again.

I don't want him gone, by any means, but if he won't extend, or take a pay cut (never happens), I can't see him sticking around.

He will have to extend, and take a much lower per year number going forward for DG to keep him long term.

I think that it could be partially true.

I am sure he is looking at cap space, age, position of need etc......I think he is determined not to grossly overpay for any position. The Gross departure was GMan asking Gross to take a pay cut .Why would anyone else be immune? Paying 22 million for a center over the next two years certainly will get his attention. Gman may be good for the teams financial health but he does not care about a player being a fan favorite ......that he has proven

From ESPN

"You have to put the proper value on the player and you get in trouble when you overpay," Gettleman said.

I think Gettle wants to fill wholes, but if BPA is a position where good at & he really likes the pick throw in the fact it could replace a huge contract & help get us from the shadow of Hurney. He'll do have no doubt. It's just good business. Khalil, CJ, Hardy, Olsen there all replaceable in my mind if we draft someone that can replace them on the cheap & a lot younger why not. Turn around & trade them for more picks or cut them & save money to give to are real future in Cam, Luke, Star, KK, Klein,White. Makes sense
