I mean I almost feel like we have to at least make an offer. Unless he's asking insane money it's worth a shot. Granted, we'd have the most fragile pair of Pro Bowl corners of all time, but they'd be sick when healthy.

Maybe an answer to our CB problems? Or too risky with injury history? https://uk.sports.yahoo.com/news/packers-to-reportedly-release-two-time-pro-bowl-cornerback-jaire-alexander-121246164.html

2022 was not a good year for QBs.

I think they are holding back to see what they have in the young guys, but I think it's a near certainty at some point they will bring someone else in. Right now (assuming we keep 5 CBs which is normal), the top 5 IMO are: 1) Jaycee Horn 2) Mike Jackson 3) Chau Smith-Wade 4) Shemar Bartholomew 5) Akayleb Evans Obviously Jaycee is the alpha in that room and paid as such. Need him to stay healthy and continue to play at a Pro-Bowl level. Mike Jack did pretty well all things considered last year, and they gave him lower-level starter money. Fair deal for both sides. Smith-Wade showed some promise as a slot CB. I think low-key he's a lock for the team. Different size and skill set than the other CBs. Shemar Bartholomew was the most sought after waiver claim last preseason. Was 5th CB most and inactive most of last year. Had a few defensive and ST snaps. Nothing of note good or bad but too small a sample size to make any judgment. Akayleb Evans was a 2022 4th Rounder for the Vikings. Has started 19 games (including Week 18 for the Panthers) in his career and played in 43. Was pretty good in 2023 before getting injured and falling down the depth chart last year. There's some other guys on the outside looking in, but until they show more in training camp I dont see anyway they make the 53. And only Jaycee, Mike Jack, and Smith-Wade are locks to make this roster IMO.

Was just reading the Ask the Old Guy story on the team's website and was shocked to see that only two 2nd Rounders have signed so far, 30 of them haven't. That isn't normal, the Texans really screwed things up for the rest of the league, no other explanation that I can think of for 30 of the 32 picks to still be unsigned at this point.

They need to address CB before season starts. This is not going to cut it.

Except it wouldn't be Rodgers leading them on a postseason run, it would be the defense and he's there to not screw up their great games. Which is why..... This times a million. I didn't watch a ton of the Jets last year, but from what I did see, Rodgers himself didn't look like a bum, the team just struggled and was more than likely due to poor coaching on the whole. The Steelers don't need MVP level Rodgers to win games, they just need him to be good enough to make some plays when it matters because the defense is keeping them in games every week regardless. In their 7 losses last season, the Steelers scored 10, 13, 17, 17, 17, 19, and 24... while giving up 19, 20, 24, 27, 27, 29, and 34 in those games. With only marginally better offense last year, they probably end up winning a few more games too. They only scored over 27 points in 3 games last season. I think this is a great move by the Steelers and if Rodgers can stay healthy all year, will get them back into the playoffs and could make some noise if their defense is up to the normal level of a Steelers defense.

We were on top of most improved teams!!! Go Panthers!!!
Stuart Smith replied to Doc LRB's topic in NFL
I hope we are as improved as a lot of fans are hoping. However, this time of year everyone in the league thinks they have improved. It will be interesting. -
How many new starters will we have on defense? That could be a good thing given how bad the D was last year, but it could also take some time for them to gel.

The Running back group imo, should be very good. Oline is probably the best we have had since the roided up first SB run. Wide Receiver group is interesting. Main questions on offense are can Young continue to play as he did in the last 6 or so games. And how good are the TE's. On defense, its a little more suspect, but we certainly could be better than last year.
-
It's very few proven commodities and heavy on "what if." I am not suggesting it isn't POSSIBLE we are a halfway decent roster but I also don't think it's very likely. Underwhelming is fine and understandable. I just don't want to see dumpster fire again.
-
Not sure we have a bad roster. It has been almost completely rebuilt from two seasons ago. Will take about 8-10 games to see if its significantly better. That being said, with the CAP and the high cost of QB's even SB teams have weaknesses at a few spots.

It’s all about the money. If the coach is an a hole but the team makes the finals more often than not, he’ll be called a great motivator and knows how to get the most out of his players If the coach is an a hole on a losing franchise, he’s a borderline criminal. -

They're adults. Boo hoo they got cursed at, I was getting cused at in little League and pee wee football at 7. Absolutely freaking ridiculous -
if Jaycee gets hurt we are screwed. I know the board thinks we are another year away, but I think we're closer, and I'd love to get a FA corner. Constantly losing destroys a teams confidence and desire. Winning helps build the team...the lockerroom gets confidence, and energy breeds off that. I think the team will develop more as a unit when we win more. And that will move us forward exponentially. The Saints comment after we beat them the second time last year...."that's not the same team we played earlier in the season" is true. The players bought into Canales, even those who went through the Rhule bullshit. We just missed out on beating the defending Super Bowl champs last year. Our WR and RB rooms are stacked. Our big problem was the DL and we certainly addressed that this year. Go ahead and build on defensive depth, get another CB. Let's go for a winning record this year, it will help build our culture. Finally a new culture. It's been missing since Riverboat.

Yeah we would just hate a guy who put up 3900 yards 28 tds just a year off an Achilles injury. I'll just point out that Rodgers yards and TDs last year exceeded Joe Flaccos CAREER BEST season in his prime.

Cool!!

People forgot that the think tank thought enough of smith-wade, to cut the vet starter troy hill mid-season. Just happened smith just injuried soon after. Personally I see no issues/PRESS THE PANIC BUTTON!!!1!1!! to take this group into TC. Of course Id love to have 5 all-pros at CB too, but this is the real world. Cuts and even trades happen once teams are going though the TC process. Just pray for health, like all other groups....

I'll toss my 2 pennies(rip) into this. I was not a fan of the Dan hire, I'd say 80against/20meh. The right hand stuff and being a part of what I viewed as the sorriest panther team in history...... The deal is some of the first moves he did saved NOTHING in cap space. He waived Bozeman, Vonn Bell, and Hurst.....That to me doesn't feel like Firererererere was listening to Dan to a high degree. Dan didn't have a 1st rounder which was 1st overall due to the supreme suckage. He didn't have 2nd rounder this past year which was a early pick right where the talent of the 2025 was. Plus the cap was not in the best shape.... The QB deal was in deep water as well. If you factor this extreme mess and analyze the current OL, DL, WR, and RB groups..... I have. Use your normal realistic cues. Even without playing the first game of this season, you must see improvement, right?? He simply could not fix all the problems, but the problems he choose to tackle... He did so like it was the 2003 Superbowl all over again. Factor in depth and age, those groups check the difficult boxes. Most of the players are young, locked in contracts, and there *should* be depth behind the starters. He's not going to bat 1.000, his mistakes have been pointed out numerous times. IMO, he does need some props for what I feel he's done right. Trade wise he's been killing the value side- extra future 2nd, starter level CB that's 28 year old for 240 picked LB that's bounced around the league, and moved up without giving the classic herniay future picks to land two edges whom are only behind QBs on the most valued chart. He also got a early 2nd and 2 5ths for a 8 sack-a-year edge that got nearly 30 mill per. Sure its got to play out and positive results are needed. Still if you know NFL and been watching since the herniay&gettlegut eras, you got to feel the process is on the up and up. Im not talking in typical off-season hopuim fluff either.... It's not over by any means either(please give him until the 2026 season end), maybe this is a real foundation in the making, us Panthers don't even know what that is...... This could be the first real long lasting winner than us fans have never had in 30 years and we are witnessing it....

I feel like we have some depth; we just need that proven nickel. Mike Jackson is a decent #2, but ideally we'd have a proven veteran in the slot. Smith-Wade might be able to fill that role, but he's far from a sure thing.
-
Todd mcshay is doing a deep dive each week on the top propects. Although he likes manning as a top guy he doesnt think he is coming out but he absolutey raves about Cade, Sellers and Garrett n. Cade is the jack of all trades, does everything kindof well, Garrett is the big game hunter that has pin point accuracy, and sellers is the wildcard, the tools and arm is simply off the chart. So adding in Manning and allar this class has unreal potential

If we're purely using that Rivera clip as a baseline, not sure that's much of anything. It really comes down to whether you're more motivating your players or constantly abusing them verbally (or even physically). That's an important distinction to make and I would have to assume the Seattle Storm allegations falls into the latter category. -
We couldn't fix everything in a single offseason and trying so in the past has gotten is into even worse circumstances. There's also the reality that while we are optimistic right now it's unlikely we will be competing for much this season. Next season we can further build on this roster and improve areas of need and hopefully be ready to make a legitimate playoff push.
